Chapter 13

Scarlett
I gave him a smile as he asked me about my birthday. I know if I tell him, he would be shocked.
"Tell me." He insisted, halting in his steps and turning to face me.
"Today." I answered.
I had forgotten about my own birthday until Lizzy came to my house this morning with a cake. She had taken a day off to spend the morning with me. She wanted to spend the evening as well, but I told her about my plans with Ethan. She almost convinced me to cancel my plans with him and celebrate it with her, but I knew I couldn't stand up on him. I would never do that.
"What?" He asked in disbelief.
I nodded my head with an amusing smile. "I had forgotten about it, but Lizzy came to my house this morning with a cake."
"You are telling me that today is your birthday. As in, right now is your birthday!?" He asked with an incredulous expression.
"Yes, Ethan. That's what I am saying." I stated.
"Why didn't you tell me this before?" He asked with a frown. "I would have gotten you a present and arranged a proper birthday plan."
"I like how my birthday is going. I am more than happy to celebrate it this way." I said, truthfully. I didn't want to celebrate any other way. I don't want to go to some fancy place and eat. I was more content in celebrating it peacefully by laughing and being carefree. Ethan looked unsure as he stared at me with a frown. I took his face in my hand and smiled at him softly. "I promise."
He nodded and smiled back. We continued with our walk. I glanced at him from time to time as he was lost in his thoughts. I thought after telling him about my birthday, he would wish me, but he still hasn't. I looked at him in amusement. I don't think he realised that.
"Ethan." A new voice called, stopping us in our track.
We turned around to look at the person. My eyebrows shot up and my eyes widen in disbelief. "Hazel?"
"Scarlett?" She called in surprise.
"You know her?" Ethan asked her.
She nodded and turned to me, glancing at my and Ethan's clasped hand. "You know him?"
I nodded. "You know her?" I asked Ethan, who nodded. There was a moment of silence as we all looked at each other. My thought was stuck on how Ethan knows her.
"Are you guys dating?" Hazel asked, looking between at our hands.
"No."
"Yes."
Both Ethan and I replied at the same time. We looked at each other. Ethan raised an eyebrow and smiled sweetly at me. "We are dating, Scarlett," he said, raising our joint hands. "no?"
He was staring at me wide eyes as if trying to say something. "Yes." I replied slowly still eyeing Ethan before turning to Hazel and firmly stating, "Yes. We are dating."
"Oh." She said, sounding a bit disappointed.
"How do you know each other?" Ethan asked, looking between us.
"We went to high school together." I answered, looking at Hazel, who was wearing a summer dress with a thin jacket covering her arms in winter.
Hazel Davis was a brown hair woman with an attitude worse than Cinderella's step-mother. She would look at people with judgment and insult them without a care in the world. She was a typical bitch, atleast that was who she was in high school. Now, after so many years, I'm not sure if she changed or still holds that personality. I hope not, but the way she was looking at me said otherwise. Hazel has the same colour eyes as her name. Even with a bitchy personality, she was blessed with beautiful features. Her face was heart shape, calling innocence but her mind was far from that. She was slim and tall which was easy to intimidate others. I never personally hated her, but Lizzy absolutely despised her.
