I couldn't believe my eyes. My Gwen stared into something unknown. Her eyes reflected fear.

I crouched beside her and cupped her face with one of my hand. When I swayed her face to the side, I noticed two holes in her neck.

"Vampire," I mumbled.

I had read in legends about creatures that look exactly like a human but feed on human blood. But I never knew those vampires existed in real life.

I gazed into Gwen's horrified eyes. My heart was throbbing with pain. But I couldn't cry.

"Leave us alone" I ordered everyone who crowded there.

The crowd dispersed. Even my father left us. He knew I need some last moments with my Gwen.

When everyone left, I stared into her eyes and whispered,

"I love you, Gwen and I promise you, that I will kill your murderer as brutally as I can."

I closed her horror-struck eyes and laid beside her, hugging her tight. That was my final moment with her.

I didn't sleep that day. I hugged her cold body and reminisced all the wonderful times we spent together. My heart was still heavy. I felt difficult even to breathe.

I realised the arrival of the next day only when I heard the chirping of the birds.

"Son, it's time for her funeral." My father informed me hours later.

I was still beside her. I nodded and kissed her lips for the last time.

Everyone was present for the funeral. Maria was there too. Her eyes were flooded with tears. She stared at me with sympathy.

I was brought back to the reality when it was time for her burial. Suddenly the heaviness in my heart became intolerable for me. I burst into tears and begged them not to take my Gwen away from me, like a small kid.

Maria embraced me in her arms and consoled me. I found a motherly affection within Maria for the first time.

Days passed.

I began to move on with my life without my other half. Although it left a deep hole in my heart, I acted as if I was strong for my father.

My father pushed me to marry Maria so that I would move on from the pain left by Gwen. But I refused him and decided to embrace the pain.

Months went by. The pain I endured started to subside. Maria helped me a lot to move on from the loss of Gwen.

Slowly both of us became attached and we got married.

Maria was a good wife. She cared for me and my father. I was so happy with her.

But she was different. She had immense strength. She was so pale and cold. And her canines were longer than normal.

I even suspected if she was a vampire. But I never questioned her as I was always in an illusion made by her.

One day when I stepped into my father's room, I saw a sight that made me aghast.

Maria was leaning onto my father's neck. At first, I thought she was kissing his neck. But when I noticed my father's eyes, I understood that he was in pain. But he didn't scream. The only proof for the pain he suffered was the tears that trickled down his eyes.

"Maria", I roared.

She turned to me in shock. Her mouth was covered in blood. My father's neck was bitten and blood oozed from the bite.

" You are a vampire", I muttered in panic.

Her demeanour changed all of a sudden. Her fangs emerged. Her eyes turned red and the veins beneath them bulged shifting her kind, angelic face to a vampire.
