Keaton's POV
"What do you mean, you're not gonna date me?" Wes shouted into the phone.
Drew and I winced.
I could just see Skylar holding the phone away from her ear. Wes hit speaker so we could all hear the conversation.
"I'm sorry," Skylar said quietly. "It's gonna be hard to maintain the relationship while I'm touring for the next five months."
Wes looked pissed. "Fine," he snapped. "It's not like I wanted to date you anyways."
I pictured Skylar's expression: hurt.
"Wes, don't be like that," I said quietly.
"No, it's fine, Keats," Skylar said. "I'll see you guys soon."
"Don't bother," Wes shouted as we heard a click.
I'll see you in five.
Skylar's words echoed through my head. Five.
Five months, not five minutes. She couldn't coin the stage expression, though. It just didn't work.
Wes threw the phone at the wall.
"WES," Drew said, exasperated. "You know you can't afford a new one."
I crossed the room and picked it up gingerly. "Screen's cracked," I announced apologetically.
Wes swore.
"Keaton's still in here," Drew snapped. "Take your anger out in your own room, not in his."
"NO DRUGS THOUGH!" I shouted, worried. I knew he would've reacted like this.
"Wouldn't dream of it," Wes said sarcastically, strorming out the door and slamming it so hard the whole house shook.
Drew and I just stared at each other, flabbergasted.
"This isn't good," I mumbled.
"Ya think?" Drew asked, standing up. "I hope things don't go from bad to worse, 'lil bro."
"I think they already have," I admitted.
Drew groaned and massaged his temples. "This is so not good for the soul."
He left the room and went after Wes.
I laid down on my bed and closed my eyes.
All I could see was Skylar.
Edges of a distant memory began to cloud my mind. I let it come.
"Ashlyn, WAIT!" a girl's voice squealed.
Normally I wouldn't have paid any attention. But these two were skateboarding.
And headed right for us.
"Guys," I said, but neither Wes nor Drew heard me.
"INCOMING!" the girl named Ashlyn screamed, and the three of us were slammed into two girls riding skateboards.
The five of us laid on the ground, helmets and boards scattered.
"What gives?" I groaned.
The two girls stood up. "Sorry," the blonde apologized. "Ashlyn, over here, had this crazy idea to just ride down the sidewalk and have people avoid us."
Drew stood up. "Ah, it's all good." He studied them. Totally checking them out. More or less Ashlyn.
"What's your name?" Wes asked the blonde, his eyes sparkling with interest.
