"I lost a piece of empathy "

Panic. Thats what coursed through Aife's veins. She was suddenly very aware of her surroundings, and she felt a stabbing in her ears, like she was drowning, and the water was trying to seep into her already tortured lungs.

The gladers froze, and with a gun to their face, they didn't really have a choice. Thomas was standing behind Aife, his hands out in surrender as he looked at the older man, whom they didn't know the name of.

Aife narrowed her eyes, exhaling a slow breath to steady her heavy breathing.

"Look, were not trying to cause any trouble, okay? we just- We need to get out of here." Thomas stuttered as he nervously glanced to his friends, their facial expressions growing as worried as his.

The man then spoke, his buck teeth full on display as he stepped closer, his shiny bald head reflecting from the light of the helicopters, "Is that so?" He teased, he pulled out a walkie talkie and turned it on, "Janson, I got em' for you. The girls here too," He declared, his eyes wide with a glint in his eyes, seemingly proud of himself for turning them in, "Im bringing them down. Don't shoot us,"

Aife let out a huff of air as she watched him put the walkie talkie back down at his side, "Come on, lets go." He demanded, when no one else moved, he continued to inch forward, gritting his rotted teeth with frustration, "I said, lets go."

Just as he shot the gun, Aife reached forward and pointed it toward the ceiling. The man still didn't let go. But neither did she. She pushed him back and the man stumbled, before returning twice as much force, trapping her in-between his large body and the railing.

The gladers were keeping them away from falling to their death, and they watched as Aife threw her head back and knocked him in the nose. The man fell back to his knees, before quickly standing up and cocking the gun once more, he was angry now.

"You little bastards!" The buck toothed man hissed, Axel, who was in the back of the group, pushed his way forward and in front of Aife, in a movement to protect her from getting shot.

A gun shot rang throughout the room, Axel and Aife flinched, both of them checking to see if the bullet went through either of them. When they felt no injuries, they glanced up to see the man fall to his knees, blood spewing out of his mouth.

Brenda pulled the trigger.

She saved them.

"Okay," Brenda panted, cocking her head towards the doorway as she motioned for them to follow, "Come on," When the teens made no movement, she repeated herself once more, "Come on! Lets go!" She dragged out.
