"No. I'm scared. I don't want to," I speak through my phone.

"Come on, it's not that bad, it's just a regular school." Kathy's trying to give me a pep talk about going to school.

"But still, it's different and UGH."

"Hey! At least you'll be with me." I hear her laugh from my phone.

"Oh great," I say, sarcastically, "I'll spend everyday with you."

"Shut up. Just be happy I was able to convince your mom to send you to the same school as me. If I didn't, you'd be stuck in that other one."

I groan, "But I don't want to go to school."

"Sucks for you. Just eat your breakfast and meet me at the bus stop."

"Fine. See you."

"See you, Nicole." Kathy drops the call and I chuck my phone on my newly made bed. I run both hands through my hair and collapse on my bed. I close my eyes, taking in the smell of Wonderstruck, Taylor Swift's perfume. I sprayed it all over myself when I got out of the shower. You'd probably smell me about a mile away.

I lay there for awhile. I almost fall asleep but shoot back to life when I hear my mom's voice.

"Nicole? Come down here!"

I push myself up off the bed and rub my eyes. I force myself downstairs with the motivation of food. When I get down, I'll have breakfast, yay.

I sit down at the table when I get down. I look to see a sandwich sitting in front of me.

"What's this?" I ask my mom.

"Ham and cheese."

"Ok, thanks mom."

I bite into the sandwich and feel the warm cheese melting in my mouth. I try not to force the whole thing in my mouth because I'm really hungry.

My mom pulls the chair beside me. There was a quiet screech but it was bearable. She sits down, sipping her coffee. The smell travels from the mug to the air around me. I hate the smell of coffee so I wince in disgust.

"You excited for school?" she asks.

I grunt, clearly the opposite of excited. I chew on my sandwich and swallow.

"Not really, no."

"Why not?"

I explain how I don't think I'll be able to adjust properly. New classes. New teachers. New friends. I don't think I'll even make it through the school year, much less the end of the week.

"But you've got Kathy, don't you?"

"Well, ya," I start, "but-"

"Just work hard and don't worry, sweetie. You'll make new friends and I'm sure you'll do well in school."

My mom stands from the table, bringing her empty mug to the sink. All of a sudden, I lose my appetite for my sandwich. I push myself up from the table, taking the plate in my hands. I open the refrigerator door and dump my plate inside.

"You're not gonna eat that?" my mom asks.

"Later. Don't feel like it anymore." I run out of the kitchen and up the stairs before my mom can object. I walk into the bathroom and brush my teeth. When I'm done, I shut the door and trudge to my room. My phone is lit up so I check to see what happened. I have a new text from Kathy.

Kathy- Bus stop nooooow

I grab my bag that's sitting by the foot of my bed. I shove my phone in my pocket. I check inside my bag as I'm walking out to make sure I don't miss anything. I've got some notebooks, a pencil case, some assigned books, two folders and my wallet.
