"Wait, I gotta go buy something," Steph says, in a rush, pulling Kathy with her into the music store.
"What are you gonna buy?" Kathy asks, confused.
Steph stops pulling her. She gets an annoyed look on her face as she says, "My brother lost my Michael Buble CD, so I have to buy a new one."
"Nicole, you coming?" Kathy calls as she's being dragged in by Steph.
"Nah, I'll just stay here. It's fine."
As Kathy and Steph go inside to look for the album, I wait outside. I turn my head casually to see some random 9 year-olds fangirling about some new One Direction merchandise they bought at Claire's. I shrug as I run my fingers through my hair. I glance inside the store to see Steph walking to the cashier, holding an album in her hands. Kathy is looking through the piled up CD's under the category of Maroon 5.
All of a sudden I feel a great weight on my shoulders. A hand appears to the right of me, and I'm about to swat it away when I hear someone's laugh in my ear. My heart stops for a moment. I'm not sure if it's thumping because of his arm being around me, or because of how close he is to me right now.
"Austin."
He laughs. Over his shoulder, he says, "Told you it was her."
I shove his arm off me, feeling a bit of regret after. I pretend to be annoyed. "Ugh. What are you doing here?"
Austin lifts his hands in defense. "What? A guy can't go to the mall with his crew? Or at least, half of the crew."
I smile as effortlessly as I can. "Hey Alex. Hi Robert."
Alex grins in response. Robert looks at me, confused. "Have we met before?"
I glance up, pretending to think. "I believe we haven't."
Austin's quick to follow up. "She knows things," he says, smiling.
"Mahomie?" Robert asks.
I purse my lips, actually thinking of my answer now. "Ya." Too lazy to explain right now. The whole Toni-is-the-Mahomie-and-I-am-just-her-best-friend thing gets tedious to repeat.
Robert nods, as if he's used to this kind of thing.
I glance at Austin, who has a giant grin on his face.
"So how do you guys know each other?" Robert asks, motioning towards me and Austin.
"We're neighbors," Austin answers.
Steph and Kathy come out of the store. I call them over to introduce them to Austin, Alex and Robert.
From the corner of my eye, I see a group of about five girls who look 13 walking past us. They're all laughing and telling each other stories. I see one of them look at Austin only to have stopped their conversation and point him out to her other friends. They all start staring as they whisper and giggle amongst themselves. I figure these girls might be Mahomies. They'll probably walk up to Austin and ask for a picture or something.
They're within earshot now. I hear one of them squeal, "That guy in the white shirt's so cute!"
One of the girl's shoot back, "Shut up. He might hear you." They start moving farther away as they talk and laugh. That was oddly irritating.
And I'm guessing they're probably not Mahomies. Just some regular girls who saw some cute guy in a mall.
I lean closer to Austin, saying quietly, "Some girls checking you out."
"Huh?" He raises an eyebrow.
I nudge my head towards the group, now almost twenty feet away. Austin just chuckled and rolls his eyes.
