Placing the basketful of pastries on the passenger seat – usually occupied by Amber – Rei started her car and drove away from the café. She glanced at the green light on her dashboard. 6:15 p.m.. I hope he is there. She prayed pushing down on the gas while carefully maneuvering to her right and then curving to the first bent. The city lights and skyscrapers diminishing by numbers as minutes ticked by; half an hour later and after a few turns, Rei parked across a white building. Hurriedly, she turned off her car’s engine, pocketed her keys inside her moss green coat’s right pocket, grabbed the basket then slide out of her car. She paused and just looked at the plain white building. She took a deep breath and let the chilly breeze of the night envelope her.
“It’s been a long time.” She uttered to herself, taking a step forward but abruptly paused when her phone rang. Fishing the device out of her pants pocket, a fond smile made its way to her lips. The screen glows with ‘K.S’. Connecting the call, Rei greeted almost breathlessly. “Hello.”
“Hi, sweetheart. How are you?” Came a deep mellow voice.
“Great. I’m out. Gonna visit a family friend. You?”
A sigh came. “Still working. I’m on my way to J’s house. I need to get some important documents from him.”
“Oh, so you’re driving. I better hang up then,”
“Eh?!” K.S. gasped. “—but,”
“I’m hanging up.” Rei said with finality. “I don’t want you to get caught by a police officer or worse get into an accident.”
K.S. sighed. “Okay, but you better call me later.”
“I promise you last night, right? I’ll call.”
“I love you.”
“I love you too. Okay, bye.” And she ended the call and put her phone back in her pocket. Inhaling, she continued her way to the building. Standing in-front of a wooden door, she raised her hand and knocked on the door twice. She knows no one will come and open the door but…just because, like many years ago, she still knocked and waited there for a minute or two before grabbing the cold silver knob. She turned the knob, quietly opened the door and took her first step inside.
Dark, quiet and cold.
It’s always been like this. She mused with a small smile on her lips.
“James.” Her voice echoed, as she walked further inside. Canvases of different sizes covered by white cloth were covering the walls. There was no furniture. Just covered canvases.
Stopping in-front of a human-size canvas, Rei lifted her hand and carefully tugged off the cloth covering it. Red, black, blue and white greeted her. Lifting her hand, she traced the red strokes scattered all over the piece and like in the past, she can feel a soothing feeling run over her body…..and probably soul.
“You know, it’s illegal to touch an art piece just like that.” A gruff voice came.
A smirk bloomed on Rei’s lips. She turned around, eyes gleaming with mischievousness. She licked her lips. “Says the devil who stole art pieces from a helpless child.”
“—I remember, we made a contract, sweet child. I gave you somewhere to paint and whatever comes after is mine.”A man dressed in a simple black long sleeve top and grey slacks retaliated with a challenging grin.
