"We should know more about each other." I said to Nathan as I gave him a file he had asked for. He looked up at me grabbing the file off his desk before reading it. "You know more about me than anyone here. You're my secretary." Nathan stated not looking up at me making me roll my eyes.

I was itching to leave hating the fact I was starting a conversation with him, but I needed to gain more insight about why my boss would want to kill him.

"I know what you do and where you go. Those things aren't who you are." I said finally making him look back up at me noticing my existence. "And you had this epiphany in the file room?" Nathan asked unamused. "We work together. We should know more about one another is all I'm saying." I said with a small smile before walking away from his desk to leave. Sighing heavily hating my new plan to get to know him, but I knew it was the best opportunity.

"So, how long have you been working here?" I asked Eve as we ate lunch outside at a small restaurant nearby. "About two years while I'm in school. What school do you go to?" She asked. I brought my fork to eat wanting to buy myself time to remember what I told them about my fake persona. "Uh, the University of California." I lied making her eyes widen as she smiled.

"I- Is Mr. Vanderbilt usually so... moody? And rude?" I asked through a nervous smile making her laugh. "Most of the time yes. He's more pleasant at his family's party's and galas that they throw but I suspect it's just for appearances." Eve explained making me hum.

"He sounds odd." I mumbled looking down at my almost empty plate when she chuckled again. "It started around when Lee decided to quit. They were pretty close before. It's actually quite sad now that I say it out loud." Eve said nonchalantly.

"Does him or his family ever handle any big cases? I would assume one of the biggest law firms like them would handle... criminal cases?" I asked hesitantly making her nod. "Yes but Mr. Vanderbilt doesn't represent criminal cases very often. Though I'm sure that will change soon. All the ones he has ever had he won." She said as the waiter took our finished plates.

"What made you want to become a lawyer?" Eve asked as we walked through the first floor of the crowded building. She pressed the elevator button as a few people walked up behind us to wait also. "I've always just found it interesting. How everyone has the same rules to follow and the same rights. People need to convict those who think they are above the law." I answered as the elevator began to quickly fill up. I ignored the hypocrisy of my words as she replied.

"That's a really good description of this job. I've always just seen it as a court room full of people arguing over whether or not someone did something bad." Eve joked making me laugh as we walked onto our floor. "Are you going to their annual Christmas party?" She asked as we walked up to my desk.

"Yeah, I guess secretaries have to go." I said hanging up my coat. I tensed confused seeing her amused expression. "Is that what he told you?" She smiled wide making me frown. "Secretaries aren't usually invited. It's full of rich snobs and anyone who is affiliated with the family. I've always had to bribe my way in." Eve said making me smile amused fighting my confusion.

"You don't seem like the bribing type, Eve. You really like going to those kinds of parties?" I asked finding them to be too formal and stuffy. "God, no. But that's how you meet all the lawyers that put the worst people away or defended the people who had everything stacked against them. It's inspiring." She breathed in admiration. "And if I happen to hand out a few business cards-" Eve smiled making me chuckle weakly interrupting her. "There it is." I laughed making her do the same.

After we finished talking, we got back to work. The hours passed; I tossed my hair in a messy bun noticing there wasn't many people left. My eyes became sore from staring at the computer for hours. Finishing up emails as I held my aching fingers and cracked them from typing all day. Noticing the time was almost one in the morning, my eyes widen slightly usually leaving around ten or eleven at night. I turned off my computer grabbing my things to leave. Knocking on Nathan Vanderbilt's glass door before opening it slightly.
