Chapter 23

Getting up from the empty bed, I changed into my clothes that were on the floor. Walking past Rose's empty bedroom making me frown as I quickly filled with worry. My stomach sank at the eerie silence until I heard laughing in the distance.

I continued to walk until I saw Rose sitting on the counter kicking her legs as Nathan stood in front of the stove. "Can you flip those too?" She asked skeptical. "You don't think I can?" He asked in fake hurt making her shake her head as she fought a smile.

Neither one of them noticed me yet as I leaned against the doorframe watching with a small smile. Nathan's muscles tensed under his t shirt as he gripped the pan before flipping the eggs.

My heart warmed as I held my chest at the sweet moment they were having. Rose laughed excitedly before Nathan turned his head feeling me staring. "Good morning!" Rose beamed before struggling to hop off the counter.

She ran towards me making me bend slightly to pick her up. "Good morning." Nathan said softly walking towards me making me look up at him. "Morning." I smiled weakly getting lost in his hypnotic eyes. "He made us pancakes and eggs." Rose beamed.

"You didn't have to do that." I said failing to suppress my small smile. "I know. She came in as I ate my own. And insisted I make her some too." Nathan teased down at her making Rose giggle.

Nathan and I ate breakfast at the table as Rose ate as she watched tv. I was silently glad she was by herself needing a minute to think and talk to him. "We need to pack our things and leave." I began.

He looked up from his plate as he ate. "Whoever hired him knows where I live. I can't risk anything else happening." I said softly looking up at Nathan full of seriousness. He was about to question me before noticing my anxious demeanor making him nod.

"Okay." Nathan replied making me ease slightly before continuing to eat. I was grateful he had let it go. I also wanted to talk to him about last night and discuss what we were. If we were more than just helping out one another out in deadly situations. But I couldn't handle the outcome of what he would say. Knowing he had confessed feelings for me before. Which only made me feel more guilty about leading him on for what happened last night.

I didn't know how I felt with being in a relationship right now. And I didn't want to confuse Rose if something happened, and he had to go back to his life in New York.

Rose dropped a fork onto the floor making me jump as my head shot up. Gripping the knife in my hand making Nathan place his on mine across the table. "It's okay." He comforted making me snap out of it as I pulled away to stand with my plate.

I felt Nathan walk in as I finished washing the dishes turning around as I dried my hands. "I need to pack our things. I'm assuming you'll be on your way back." I said without emotion as I left the kitchen to see Rose watching tv again making me continue to walk hearing him follow.

"What do you mean?" Nathan rushed after me as I walked away into the hallway. "Well, you found me. We're both alive." I grabbed my duffle bags in my closet. "Don't let me stop you from getting back to your life in New York." I said as I took my clothes from the dresser.

"I don't have a life there. That life was thrown onto me when my brother had decided to leave. Without any sort of warning. Leaving me with everything he would have inherited. I have nothing in New York keeping me there. I didn't know anything better than what I had been told by my family. How life was supposed to be because my father was a famous and powerful lawyer which I had to live up to. I tolerated it all until I met you and realized how happy I could be with someone." Nathan confessed full of seriousness walking towards me making me frown.

"'Someone like me'? A mediocre assistant sent to kill you?" I asked sarcastically before pulling away to continue to pack my things. "You are more than that. Killing people isn't who you really are." Nathan stated making me scoff with tears in my eyes.
