...like a memory erased

sasha ran up the steps to her companion's door, a bag of sushi threaded between her fingers. she was nearly shaking with excitement. ymir lived in an apartment, so all she had to do was buzz in. the girl was distracted. she wasn't sure how ymir would react to this news, but either way...it was happening. this could be a game-changer.

the taller opened the door and looked down at sasha. her eyes looked tired, but she had gotten ready, hair pulled back and shoes on.

"hey-" before she could say anything, sasha grabbed her shoulders and shook her with a captivating look in her eyes.

"you're hanging out with historia later," sasha spoke fast and began analyzing ymir's face to gage her reaction. her bag swinging in her hands.

"...is that..sushi?" ymir fixated on the bag, not fully processing what sasha said. "i can smell it."

bruh...historia said the exact same, sasha thought before she tilted her head, "hello?!" she shook her shoulders again, "did you not hear me, stupid?"

"about historia?" ymir scratched the back of her neck and sasha nodded. "first of all, it makes me really happy that you'd do that for me. i owe you. but secondly, i wish i had...you know, a day of preparation," her feet shifted as she spoke softly.

"oh...well we can do a rain check! no worries-"

"no, i'm still going." ymir's face was serious. her face lit up with momentum, like she's dreamt of this before. like she's been awaiting the feeling.

"oh?" sasha's arms relaxed and she felt better knowing her friend wasn't as anxious as she expected.

"how could i miss out on this opportunity? are you kidding? i'm gonna shit myself though..."

sasha laughed as they went inside. she took two trays out of the plastic bag and the two shared the food before freshening up and strategically planning the rest of the day.

"...dude what the fuck am i supposed to talk about?" ymir looked up at the ceiling searching for advice.

"people say it comes naturally...but i think that's bullshit." ymir laughed at sasha's words and agreed.

"it probably depends on circumstance. honestly is there anything you're supposed to talk about?" ymir began cracking her fingers in a haze of anxiety.

"...not sure. but it's cute when people are nervous...mostly when they're nervous about you," sasha was sitting on the floor near the coffee table in the living room aside ymir, repeatedly throwing a small stress ball at the wall.

"i would be honored if someone was freaking out over me. besides, historia already likes you, there's nothing to worry about," she smiled as her ball rolled back into her hands. ymir furrowed her brows and let out a sigh.

"but not like that," ymir pressed her lips together. "i don't want to change her mind, you know?"

"bruh...what do you have to be ashamed of?"

ymir thought, when thinking of yourself, it isn't a challenge to find negatives. but if sasha's right, maybe she should just ignore her thoughts for the time being. they were only raising her adrenaline.

"what are some things i shouldn't talk about? maybe that'll help better," the two sat in silence for a few minutes as they brainstormed.

"don't talk down about yourself...probably avoid family drama? keep it light-hearted." sasha spoke as she thought, watching her ball roll out of reach. "just talk like we do."

"thanks, sasha," ymir put a hand on the other's shoulder. "i think i'm due for a distraction."

historia scanned the shelves before her and looked for the items on her list. her parents sent her to the convenience store to pick up a few things for dinner. an abundance of colors lit up the aisle, but the dim lighting was tinted yellow, making most of the store's light from the glass windows surrounding the area.

a bag with long straps hung by her waist that only held her wallet. she held the straps near her shoulders as she slowly moved down the aisle. not many were there, besides a few older people.

that was until sasha braus swooped in the entrance doors with the brightest smile on her face. from the looks of it, she was buying something behind the counter. she had a bag from a sushi place nearby which she was also using to hold her phone and other belongings.

historia smiled at the girl's presence. she was always the center of attention. a familiar face she could trust. she was always friendly, but people took advantage of her. it wasn't until high school, when ymir and her got closer, that sasha had a friend to look out for her.

as historia resumed her search, sasha noticed and made her way to her. she could recognize the bangs from a mile away. she stood facing historia for a few moments before the other felt her eyes.

they stared, as if they already trusted each other, already met before. sasha usually never let silence consume the atmosphere, so she began.

"hey, historia! nice to see you. i've never seen you outside of school before," she swung her back aggressively, not paying attention to her force. "you look so pretty," somehow her smile enlarged, or perhaps it changed because it was a different kind of smile.

"you do, too! how are you?" historia felt apprehension boil over her. she wasn't sure what to say and how long this conversation would last, she just wanted it to be over.

"perfect! and how are you, of course?" sasha could sense the other's anxiousness, trying to lighten the mood.

"fine," sasha tilted her head at that word, already expecting historia to be hard to get to. "is that sushi? ...i can smell it." she had nothing against sasha, but it took so much energy to talk some days.

"yeah! i'd offer you some, but it's for ymir. she's never tried it before," she rolled her eyes. "can you believe that?"

historia let out a light laugh, "you're going to see her, right now, then?"

sasha blinked, wondering why historia would ask that. did she want to see ymir? or was she just making an observation? but the real reason historia asked was because she wanted sasha to give ymir a greeting, is all.

"say hi for me?" historia brushed past the other, turning her head as she left.

sasha grabbed her hand, she knew she would probably never get a chance like this again. and ymir was a dumbass, how long would it take her to ask historia to hang out? it was hopeless. and it was at this moment she knew, historia had the potential to like ymir. she exhibits behaviors that show she already trusts her, by the way she says her name and the way she reacts to the mention of it.

but ymir and historia were nervous wrecks. she accepted this, knowing she would probably be doing a lot of the work for the time being until they got closer. they needed reassurance that they weren't bothering each other, and that was all sasha had to give.

"ymir has told me a lot about you," sasha was almost out of breath, hesitant to ask this. "but she's an idiot. she really wants to see you."

historia's eyes bled astonishment. she knew ymir wanted to be her friend, but the reminder was nice. she grabbed sasha's hand and let it fall back beside her.

"no need to worry, ymir is really cool. we can hang out today, if that's okay," her smile closed her eyes, "do you wanna come too?"

"nah...i think she'd prefer you alone," sasha gave a wink and made her way to the door. historia was left in a fit of muddled thoughts, but started to make the connection.
