...the years have turned to ages
the two walked into the house dripping like wet dogs. alma didn't have work today, when she noticed their state she dropped the wooden spoon she was holding.
"uh...what happened?" she tilted her head in confusion as they started to walk towards the stairs. "NO, don't walk through my house soak and wet!"
"mom, what are we supposed to do? shake off? stay outside and wait for ourselves to freeze?" historia's words were met with a deadpan. ymir was amused.
"i'll go get towels. if you get my rugs wet...ill kill you." alma laughed and went towards the bathroom, returning with plastic bags and several towels.
"take off your jackets and shoes and put them in these bags. then walk upstairs carefully. come back with your wet clothes and i'll dry them for you, alright?" the two nodded as they did as told. when they went into historia's room, ymir noticed it wasn't clean like the last time.
every surface was covered in graded papers and reports. clothes seeped from the closet doors. her bed was sloppy and empty coffee mugs littered her bedside table.
"sorry about the mess. i had no idea you were gonna come over."
"it's okay. the messy kind of works." historia frowned as she searched for dry clothes. "i can help you clean if you want?"
"no, that's alright-"
"come on, we both know if we don't clean it now...it won't get cleaned for a while and you deserve a clean room the first week back to school. it'll take off some stress."
historia turned to face the other. she didn't want to have to owe her. she was dealing with her own stuff, and she was sure cleaning wasn't how ymir wanted to spend the rest of her day. but before she could object again, she started to grab the empty mugs.
"hey, you should at least get dressed first." she threw her clothes on the bed and shivered at the sudden movement.
"don't i have to wait for my clothes to dry?" ymir lowered her brows in confusion.
"yeah, but what would you wear waiting for them to dry?"
"ohh. you're right." she scratched the back of her head upon realizing her mistake.
"plus, we're not gonna make you stay in those wet clothes, idiot." historia shook her head.
"but nothing of your's will fit me."
"it's okay. i have an older sister. she's moved away a few years ago."
"damn...i thought you were an only child." ymir wondered what she looked like. would she have light hair, too? or would she look more like rod?
"i technically have been for like...five years?"
"wow...are you two close?" she rocked her feet back and forth while scanning the room out of nervousness.
"yeah...her name is frieda. she doesn't like to stay in one place for too long."
"OHH, is this her?" ymir pointed to a picture frame she had noticed last time, but never connected the dots. "she looks like you, but with dark hair."
"and she's a lot taller. 5'7" i think?"
"oh my god, i'm the same height."
"well...that works surprisingly perfect." historia opened her door to go to the room right beside her and returned with darker clothes that matched ymir a lot better than her's would.
"here," she passed the clothes to the other and led her into the bathroom. "let me know if these work for you." the door slowly closed and the two got dressed before returning downstairs. ymir grabbed the empty mugs and placed them in the sink as alma spoke.
"aw, frieda's clothes." she touched her heart as she remembered the days frieda was in high school. soon, all of their clothes were in the dryer and they headed back upstairs to finish cleaning.
after about thirty minutes. they lay on the bed exhausted, surrounded by stacks of papers and the scent of a candle.
historia wondered when ymir would leave. was she going to stay for dinner? she was torn, she didn't want her to go, but she felt like she was causing tension.
"hey, can we color?" historia jumped at the sudden noise.
"color? why?"
"you have really cool art stuff." ymir's gaze travelled to a box filled with different markers and a variety of pens.
"oh, yeah? i didn't know you were into art."
"i'm not, but those colors are pretty."
"sure, we can color. or draw. i don't really have anything we could color."
the two moved to the floor as historia gathered the supplies. she grabbed the markers ymir was excited about along with some other random utensils and two notebooks.
they eventually got more comfortable and historia lay on her stomach. she wasn't sure what to draw.
"you haven't drawn anything and it's been 20 minutes." ymir stared at the other's blank paper which drew historia's eyes to her drawing.
"you drew a cat..." historia sat up and hugged her knees to her chest.
ymir frowned, "do you not like it?"
"no, it's so cute! i just wasn't expecting to look up and see you drawing a cat." historia kept her eyes below.
"oh...why aren't you drawing?" ymir inched closer and joined her in staring at the blank paper.
"i just can't focus..." historia's heart quickened as she felt the warmth of ymir. their arms barely touched, but it was still impactful.
"what's wrong?" with genuine concern, ymir watched as historia looked up slowly.
"nothing...it's just..." ymir's face warmed as the other inched closer.
"historia..." she felt the warmth on her lips as historia kissed her softly. it was the essence of a kiss, barely there. it was an invitation.
ymir put her hand on her cheek, letting her eyes fall as her stomach swarmed with emotion.
and she thought about the first time she thought about the other. the first few years when she didn't entirely understand it. those years have since turned to ages. but the door handle rattling resulted in the two jumping back, eyes glued on the door.
"it's dinner time," alma's voice came from outside the door, causing sighs of relief. "come down whenever you're ready, it's right out of the oven!"
but as her footsteps descended, ymir stood up and ran out the door. she didn't want to think when she felt historia's eyes on the back of her head, begging her not the run. and she didn't stop when alma called after her either.
"it's an emergency." but it really wasn't. she shut front door.
