...like the back of my hand

as the winter began to fade, soft colors scattered outside and the rain relentless. the birds mithered and cawed at the thunder. it smelled of mud as the plants awakened once again.

the lonely bench had warmed and was now usually accompanied by the old man. excitement filled the air as the school year got closer and closer to an end.

three girls shared their weekend collapsed on a blanket. the dew of the grass left it slightly wet, but they payed little mind to it.

"do you guys know when spring break actually is?" for once, sasha's hair was down. she blocked her eyes from the sun with her forearm.

the other two shook their heads in unison.
historia lay on her stomach, skimming her textbooks for finals. ymir was the only to sit upright.

"it's gotta be soon...i don't think i can take this anymore," sasha continued to complain as the sun slowly went down. the conversation all jumbled to historia as she studied.

it brought comfort to her. at the start of the school year, she had no friends. and now she had two. two who were okay with silence, two who were okay with her.

she wondered what that part of her would think of her now. perhaps she wouldn't be capable of believing it. either way she hoped she'd be proud of herself.

within this time, her issues were not all solved so easily. ymir and sasha just made her issues more tolerable. and that was all she could really ask for.

the sounds of cicadas and crickets issued sasha's expedition home. she was starved and god knows how cranky she could get hungry. the others said their goodbyes and she was quickly home with her dinner.

sasha may have come off as an extrovert, someone who could easily make friends. but that was far from the truth. she was so likable because she never really showed her true self to many others. she showed what they wanted to see, at the expense of her own energy.

one cannot truly always hide, it would be rather exhausting.

speaking of, ymir tried not to drift into sleep. the sounds of spring were the perfect conditions for slumber, adding onto it, historia quietly mumbled the words from her book. whatever she was reading, it was exponentially boring. for ymir did not think she could last a second longer awake.

historia, too, had began to feel tired. she had even sat up in an effort to stay focused.

"i'm really sleepy," ymir rested her head on the other's shoulder.

"me too...i can walk you home..?"

"not yet," she closed her eyes. "i wanna stay like this for a bit longer."

the sun and moon traded places in the sky. as it got darker, historia closed her book and ended her studies there. she had always used school as a way to distract herself, but the dreaded question always returned.

she was lucky to be where she was, but what if it didn't last?

"ymir..." the crickets conveniently sung quieter.

"hm..?"

"don't you ever wonder what would happen if we don't last?" her eyes filled with worry.

ymir had expected these kinds of thoughts from the other. she, too, considered such things.

"i'm not leaving anytime soon," she smiled. "and besides, you don't have to prepare for the worst. just have to believe in me."

"i will."
