C10 - a soldier after solitude

...a soldier after solitude

ymir and historia stood at the entrance as the cold breeze incapacitated their lungs. students quickly got in their cars and others walked without a single glance back.

"you wanna walk together?" ymir focused on all the sounds outside. the engines starting, the footsteps racing home, the rain droplets creating a rhythm as they fell off the roof.

"sure," historia shrugged her shoulders as they began to walk. she noticed the wet roads and deep puddles that hadn't been there this morning. "i guess it rained all day." dark rain clouds threatened the already cool atmosphere.

"yeah and it's fucking freezing...even more freezing than usual." ymir felt her cheeks warm up to raise her temperature as they made it further down the road.

"please, your teeth are clattering." historia gave short laughs that stung from the cold air.

"shut up right now," the other elbowed the shorter one in shock she'd bring that up.

"i think that's so cute, you act all-"

"shut up...." ymir continued to elbow historia, but at one point she noticed something worth seeing.

"-tough but you're really...hey, stop hitting me." ymir resumed trying to get historia's attention so she could see.

"no, look." it was a fountain. it was running the day before even with the cold weather, but today it was frozen solid.

"woah..." historia tapped on the frozen water, but soon enough they left it behind so they could hurry back home.

"are you done bullying me, yet?"

"i wasn't bullying you, i said you were cute." ymir's heartbeat began to quicken as she recalled the words.

"you said my teeth clattering was cute-"

"yeah, but it's only cute because it's you."

"shut up..." but she would never admit how weak this made her knees. her teeth had found warmth in her astonishment.

"is that all you can say?" she made eye contact with ymir as she repositioned her backpack on her shoulder.

"i had no idea what i was getting into..." historia laughed at ymir's avoidance as they continued down the road.

but deep down, she worried ymir started to feel different about her. and it didn't take long before it all started to connect. why the hell was she worried if ymir liked her or not?

oh...

as they walked, ymir noticed the change in historia's expression.

"you okay?" she put her hand on the other's shoulder without entirely realizing at first.

"yeah...just cold."

ymir let her mind settle. and soon she was wondering what she could say or do to make historia feel a little better until they got home. it was obvious to ymir when someone was putting on a front to avoid talking about what was really upsetting them. but she couldn't figure out what historia was really thinking about.

"you know...i don't want you to feel pressured into staying my friend. i know it can get weird when-" but before she could finish, a car drove past with such intention to its destination, it went right over the puddle.

right over the puddle ymir and historia happened to be next to. they stared ahead as they felt the cold water drench their clothes. it slowly seeped through their jackets, but at least their backpacks and the things inside were still intact.

"fuck..."

"we need to get inside fast, so you can just come home with me for now. it's right up the road." ymir wondered if she should take this opportunity. historia was right, where she lived wasn't too far from historia, but it would be a long walk alone and soaked in rain water. and they would get to historia's first. they uncomfortably continued their walk, laughing at each other's drenched hair.

historia honestly wanted some time alone to think about her sudden realization, but she couldn't let ymir spend anymore time wet in the winter air than she had to. she really did like her. maybe not at first because she didn't know her very well, but now it was way too easy. it became incredibly clear over break because all historia missed was ymir.

but now she felt ymir was drifting away into more of a friend. she never returned the flirty comments she made and she seemed...off.
