...we named our favorite sunset
the breeze wrapped around ymir as she made her way to school. the snow was gone, but black ice happily sat on the roads. grass crunched as she walked while cold air snuck up her coat. breathing made her lungs burn and she felt her lips cracking each inhale. she was already exhausted.
this year, it felt like break only lasted a second. and now she was heading back to somewhere so draining.
she checked for any course changes for the new semester. and she figured out there were two. first and final period.
she made her way up the stairs, no sign of sasha. if historia were here, she would already be in class. she thought to herself...berner, moblit...where the hell is that?
the halls were filled with scattered students who were either mingling or heading to class. she scanned the nameplates left and right searching for the name until she stood in front of a closed door. their school was pretty formal, so there weren't really decorations allowed. all the classrooms were pretty plain...
but inside, the room wasn't so bland. ymir scanned the room for a second before noticing historia. she stopped in her tracks, staring at the back of the girl's head.
"welcome! please take a seat wherever you'd like," the teacher smiled. "i don't care where so feel free to pick wherever."
"oh...thanks." as ymir spoke, historia recognized the voice and turned to face the sound. she gave a warm smile as the other made a gesture to the seat next to her. moblit left to monitor the hall and more students started to arrive, little by little.
"i had no idea we'd have a class together, ymir. how was your break?"
"you know..." ymir felt her cheeks betray her. she knew the entire break, she was just thinking about historia. the day they hung out was nauseating...in the best way possible, but a longing feeling at that. "you know what...i literally didn't do anything."
historia smiled with her eyes before a new thought resurfaced her mind.
"did any of your other classes get switched?" she when to grab her phone to look up her schedule.
"oh yeah, my final class got changed, too," she checked the update again. "kenny ackerman? for history?"
the other's eyes lit up, "yeah, i have that class too."
ymir couldn't contain her smile. moblit came in before she could respond. the bell rang and chairs scooted into place, squeaking sounds followed.
"welcome back, everyone. i'm mr. berner. this is a math course, AP statistics. i'm excited to see fresh faces. is any-" as moblit continued his introduction, historia rested her chin on her hand and swung her leg back and forth. to get her attention, ymir lightly kicked historia in the leg with her foot.
"glad i get to have you twice a day," she whispered, keeping her eyes on the teacher.
historia only let out a soft laugh. and as the rest of the class went on, they weren't able to speak much. they shared quick glances and watched each other's eyes get heavier. but before they knew it, it was about time to leave.
"there's about three minutes left so talk amongst yourselves!" moblit had a friendly energy constantly surrounding him. he wasn't like many other teachers at this school, who were either loud and strict or strict and boring.
"what class do you have next?"
"physics. it's right below on the second floor."
ymir lit up at the opportunity.
"perfect, i can walk you there if you'd like..." ymir continued as she scratched the back of her neck. "i know it's hard for you sometimes to walk in class alone."
historia's face softened as their knees touched. people were talking to each other, but it was a respectable volume. when the bell rang, they walked squished together in a herd of other students.
historia tried to say something, but ymir couldn't hear. and when ymir tried to let her know, historia couldn't hear either. shoulders began to clash as people rushed through. some didn't even notice historia because of her height. after one too many people nearly toppled over historia, ymir grabbed her wrist and led her through the obnoxious crowd.
"damn..." ymir looked at the crowd they had just escaped as they stood at the end of the hall. "that was-" she was shocked when she faced historia, who was clearly flushed and bright red.
"thank you so much, 'mir. i hate this hall. too much traffic." the other lost another breath at the nickname. "come on, if we don't hurry you won't have time to get to class."
as they neared historia's classroom. they said their goodbyes. the rest of the day they waited for sixth hour. eyes remaining heavy, but excited. ymir was getting increasingly annoyed with the new people in her classes. so many of them were grossly offensive. so when she finally reached her last class of the day and saw not only historia, but a historia smiling with her best friend, it was like a breath of fresh air. she grinned brightly and sat down next to the two.
"all three of us?" ymir put her backpack down beside her chair as she got comfortable.
"yeah! isn't it so cool?" sasha let out a snort. but intentionally she didn't tell anyone she had seen the schedule way earlier and was already aware they'd all share a class. she was pretty close with the counselor so...getting the three of them into the same class together wasn't so challenging.
"what a coincidence. i'm glad we get to end our day here." ymir sighed in agreement.
"tell me about it. all day i've been annoyed as hell." ymir stopped to notice mr. ackerman wasn't anywhere to be seen. he must have needed a bathroom break.
"there must be something in the water...everyone has been out of line today." historia shook her head.
"i heard someone talk about mikasa...mikasa. they said she looked way better with her hair longer and now she looks...like man." sasha rolled her eyes upon recalling the moment from earlier.
ymir slammed her hand on the table, "what the hell? her hair looks fantastic. i'm on a new level of angry now."
"yeah, right? she's so pretty. the audacity." historia's eyes furrowed. mikasa was one of the sweetest people at this school. how could they say that about her?
"i heard multiple freshmen say the n-word today in the hall." ymir continued.
"seriously..." sasha let out an exasperated whine. "i'm ashamed to be here."
"for real...i can't believe all these dull boys feel the need to discuss things that don't concern them and carelessly use slurs to look cool or seem funny." historia felt her head begin to hurt at the stress.
"whatever reason they're doing it for...it's gross." the others silently agreed with ymir as the teacher returned and began class. he seemed a bit...crazy. but it's better than boring, right?
as the three continued to have an effortless final period, sasha parted as the bell rang to get to basketball practice.
winter made the sun set so fast. and as historia and ymir walked home, the sky marked its colors in their minds.
