I woke up laying in the dirt beside Carl, shivering. The temperature had really dropped and it was still dark out side, the moon was up.
I pretended to sleep for a bit, watching Rick play with Judith and hushing her every time she fussed.
"Here," I said sitting up, "I'll take her if you want to go to sleep," stretching my arms out towards him to take her.
He slowly handed her over, hesitantly, wanting to say he was good but knew he was not.
"Alright, just wake me if you need me." He said.
I nodded, and watched as he fell asleep, his breath slowing and his chest barely rising.
Judith didn't fuss much, but when she did I started to sing or do a little dance, and a jolly little smile would appear on her face.
"I'm gonna marry a rock star," I started singing at the top of my head when Judith didn't want to sleep, and threatened to wake the whole group, "we're gonna move down town." I pinched her belly and she giggled.
I held her to my chest and started to hum as she fell asleep. The next person to wake was Daryl, he saw me with Judith and made his way over to sit beside us.
"How was your night?" He whispered in my ear, sending shivers down my spine.
"I couldn't sleep, yours?"
"It was fine."
I looked down at Judith her chubby cheeks mushed together as she slept.
"Your great with her Beth." Daryl said, staring me in the eyes, I could tell there was more to the message, but I couldn't quite decipher it.
"Thanks." It was odd, I felt like a middle school child, so awkward but yet obviously having feelings for a person. Always wondering if they knew, if they felt the same way. They were always on your mind, in the back of your head.
We sat next to each other, sometimes when Judith would stir I would start to him again, keeping her asleep.
We sat close enough that our arms touched, and our feet sometimes did too.
We stayed in this position for a little while, or so it seemed, when slowly the group groggily got up. Ready for another day of walking.
Daryl stood, slinging his crossbow over his shoulder, one that I remember holding until my arms got tired. I wondered if I could still shoot well, it had been a long time.
By noon we had reached a block in our road hoping to find a car or supplies of any sort, only to turn up with nothing. There was seven cars all lined horizontally, almost as if someone had purposefully done it.
"Stop! Everyone drop your weapons!"
