Chapter 2: Walks & Tickets

Ivy's POV

I took in the familiar sights as I walked down the old broken sidewalk. Today was the first time I've made it out of the apartment building without just going right back in.

Olivia talked me into trying to come out like this. She said it was the next step in moving on.

It hasn't been such a quiet walk due to all the cars and people all over the place, but this was California's "quiet".

I took in the "fresh" air scent of food stands, gasoline, and sweet flowers. It sounds kind of gross but being stuck in the apartment all week has gotten me to appreciate things like this.

My phone in my back pocket continued buzzing, but I chose to ignore it. Right now I just wanted to be alone.

As I strolled down the street, my cell phone continued buzzing.

I groaned in annoyance and turned it off.

When I stepped into the apartment, I had expected Lacey and Olivia to be there to congratulate me on making it out of the apartment.

Instead, I found a woman I hadn't expected to ever see again; my mom.

"Mom? What are you doing here?" I gasped.

In her wrinkly hands she gripped a tissue with smudged make-up caked on it.

"Your father's in the hospital," she sobbed.

"What?" I gulped.

She nodded and scooted over for me to sit down next to her. I plopped down next her.

"His car broke down on the way from work. They said he was walking to get some help when a gang came across him."

She couldn't continue, instead sobbed into a tissue some more.

"Where is he?" I held the tears in the best I could.

"They transported him to New York. He's in one of the best hospitals they could afford."

I grabbed my phone and clicked it on.

-Olivia: Your mom just showed up-
-Lacey: Where the hell are you???-
-Ana: Has your mom showed up yet?-

5 missed calls from Olivia.
3 missed calls from Lacey.
1 voice mail from Ana.
17 missed calls from Father.

"We're booking the next flight to New York," I announced as I left the room to buy the plane tickets.
