I went straight to my mom's room when Marley and I got to the hospital. When we walked in, tears welled up in my eyes when I saw my mom standing, not hooked up to any hospital equipment. The markings on her nexk were barley visible now. She was no longer wearing her hospital gown but was in normal clothes. She looked over as we walked in. I made my way to her and gave her a proper hug for the first time in a while.
"It's good to see you standing again." I said
"Are you ready to go home?"Mom smiles. "More than ready."
Marley and I gathered up my parents things while dad walked out with mom. This was the first time she had been outside in a while. It was the perfect day for it. The sun was out, a cool breeze and just the right amount of clouds. When we got my car, dad helped mom into the the back while Marley and I put their stuff in the trunk. Once we were all in and buckled, I took us all home.
When we arrived hom. Marley and I ran ahead inside and put my parents stuff away. Dad walked in with mom and immediately her eyes lit up. A few balloons decorated the house and a banner was hung in the living room that read "Welcome Home!"
"Did you girls do all this?" Mom looked around at the decorations.
"We wanted to celebrate." I explained. "Today definitely calls for a celebration."
"My parents are on their way." Marley added. "We had a local restaurant catered and they're picking it up."
We all gathered on the couch as we waited. After a few minutes, the doorbell rang. I got up and opened the door. Marley's parents had arrived.
"Hi, Mr. and Mrs. Taylor." I greeted. "Come in."
"Thank you, Mya." Mrs. Taylor smiled as her and husband squeezed by me.
They sat the food on the table then joined everyone in the living room. Mrs. Taylor walked uo to my mom and enveloped her in a hug.
"It's so good to see you." She said. "We're happy to see you out of the hospital. The girls told is about the wedding. Congratulations!"
Mom smiled. "Thank you. I'm happy to be home."
We exchanged a few more greetings before heading into the kitchen to eat. We all served ourselves then gathered around the table. As we were eating, mom pointed to me.
"Mya, I've been meaning to ask you. Who gave you that necklace?" She asked.
"A friend gave it to me." I answered. "By the way, I was wondering if I could bring a plus one and or a date with me to the wedding?"
"Sure, honey." Dad replied.
I look over at Marley and she raises an eyebrow at me. She pulled out her phone and hid it under the table. A couple of seconds later and my phone pinged.
Ma: Are you talking about who I think you're talking about?"
My: Maybe.
My: Your plan may have worked a little bit
Ma: When are you gonna ask him?
My: I'm gonna help with some of the wedding planning first. Then I'll ask.
Marley looked up at me with the biggest grin. As the day went on, we talked and just enjoyed my mom being home. When evening came, Marley and her parents left and it was just mom, dad and me. Mom was feeling tired so she had already gone to bed and dad and I were sitting in the living room just talking.
Dad looked over at me. "Mya, have to ask. What was the tour like?"
"It was really fun." I replied. I went on to explain everything. How the days went to watching the shows from backstage. To describing the tour bus to all the places we went.
"It sounds like you girls had a good time." Dad said.
"We did." I smiled. "Marley and I agreed that it's funny that we were with the same band but with four completely different members from when we saw them when I was four."
Dad laughed. "Where were y'all when you got the call?"
"We were in Ohio. We had to fly back." I explained.
Dad nodded and sighed. "I missed this. Just the three of us."
"We missed you too." I said. "It's really nice to have you back."
"Do you remember that night?" Dad asked. "The first concert I took you too?"
I smiled. "I've never forgotten it."
"You were so excited even though I'm not entirely sure you knew who we were seeing." Dad laughed. "I think you were just excited we doing something."
"Maybe but I still had fun being on your shoulders the whole time."
"You were so little there was no other way for you to see." Dad chuckled.
"And we were so close to the stage, you probably could've thrown me up there."
"And when the night came to an end we had an opportunity to meet the band but you had fallen asleep." Dad said. "So we took you home."
"And I wore one of the shirts you got me to church the next day." I added. "I remember I wouldn't stop talking about the show."
Dad laughed. The more we talked to more we bonded, making up for twenty-two hears apart. My mom was home and my dad was back in my life. I couldn't believe it. He was right.
It's gonna be okay.
