A month had passed since the last update on my mom. In that time, her and my father's relationship blossomed back into a what would seem like a healthy marriage. It was like my father had never left and I was thankful for it. It was nice to see my mother smiling again. Laughing and joking like she used too. It was always when dad was there.
Marley and I arrived at the hospital at around 10:30 like I would most days. My father had texted me asking us to hurry to the hospital because he and mom had something important to tell us. We went to my mom's room and caught the doctor as he was leaving.
"Good morning, girls." He greeted us with a smile.
I smiled back. "Good morning. How's she doing?"
"Well, I gave them some good news but I'll let them tell you."
I nodded and waited for him to leave before walking in with Marley behind me. My dad was sitting on the edge of mom's bed while my mom was sitting up much more than she ever had simce being put into the hospital. They looked over at us with huge grins on their faces.
"So what did the doctor day?" I asked.
"He said your mother only has to be in the hospital for one more month and then she can go home." Dad replied.
I moved to the side of the bed and bent down to hug my mom. "That's amazing!"
My mom returned the hug then turned to my dad and took his hands. "We have some other news to share with you."
"Okay." I sat down on the bed. Marley moved to stand behind me. "What is it?"
"Well," mom began. "we've been doing a lot of thinking and talking since your father arrived. I'm sure you've noticed."
I nodded.
"And we've thought this through and through and we have no doubt in our minds we want this." Dad continued. He looked into my eyes as he finished speaking. "Mya, your mom and I are going to remarry."
I stared back at them for a moment. My dad noticed the slight hesitation to react and he reached over and took my hand. "Don't worry, honey." He said. "I'm not leaving this time."
I gave his hand a gentle squeeze. "I'm happy for you both."
"Me too." Marley chimmed. "When is it happening?"
"We'll start planning once Mya's mom has been released." Dad answered.
"And I have something to ask you." Mom added looking us. "Mya, would you be my maid if honor? And Marley, would you be one of my bridesmaids?"
I smiled and wiped a small tear from my eye. "I'd be honored to."
"I would too." Marley replied. "Thank you for making me feel apart if the family."
"You are a part of our family, Marley." Mom smiled. "You and you parents have been there for Mya so much in her life and we're so thankful for the three of you. You've girls have handled this all so well. I want to apologize again for making you come home early. I know you girls must've been having a great time."
"It's okay, mom." I gently squeezed her hand. "My family comes first and besides the guys understood."
Marley looked down at her phone. "We better get going. Remember what today is?"
"Oh right, we're packing today." I said, getting up from the bed.
"When are you officially moving in?" Dad asked.
"On Friday." I answered. "We're just packing up my today. I'll call you guys later."
I grabbed my bag and followed Marley out of the room. "Are you excited?" Marley asked.
"I'm about to move in with my best friend." I playfully nudged her shoulder. "Why wouldn't I be excited?"
"Well, I am a handful."
"Trust me I know." I wrapped my arm around her, pulling her into a hug. "But that's why I love you."
As we walked out into the parking lot, Marley reached up a gently reached up and twirled my necklace in her fingers. "Have you talked to Jeff lately?"
I pulled my keys from my bag. "I did a couple of days ago." I unlocked my car and we slid in. "He was checking in. He said Avery and the guys were wondering about us."
Marley smiled. I started the car and drove us to my house. When I pullled in the driveway, we got to boxes we had bought that morning out of the trunk and headed upstairs to my room. We spent the rest of the day packing up what I wanted to move to Marley's apartment. It was close to 5:00 by the time we finished. My room was mostly empty and we moved the boxes downstairs and placed them by the door.
I sat down on the couch with an exhausted sigh. Marley sat down beside me, letting her arms fall to her sides. "Thank goodness we're done."
"Not yet." I objected. "We still gotta finish the paperwork then move everything to you apartment then we gotta unpack everything."
Marley glanced at me. "You're not making this sound fun."
"This was your idea."
Marley laughed a little. "Another one if my great ideas."
"And besides, it'll all be worth it after Friday."
"Yeah. Big things are happening." Marley grinned. "Moving in together, you're parents remarrying. What's next?"
I smiled and laughed. As the evening went on, Marley's question replayed itself in my mind.
What's next?
