Chapter 9: Doubts and worries

"Any news lately about the Bergmanns?" Nikolai asked while helping you empty out the buckets that you used to clean the area.

"Not much. They got strip off their titles after what Calista has done. Her brother William was sent to prison for being an accomplice and their parents, well th-they....committed suicide."

"You don't believe they did, huh?" He noticed the uncertainty of your tone and it wasn't that much of a surprise. It seemed like he already had an idea on what really happened to Calista and William's parents, but he waited for your response to confirm his hunch.

"Narissa Beaumont is a cunning woman. She leaves no traces behind." You replied bluntly as you mentioned the name of Eugene's mother. Nikolai hummed in response and gave you a look that urged you to continue speaking.

You told him that before you came to Mitras, you were from the underground. Your mom raised you until you were seven since she was murdered by the men that Narissa Beaumont sent. You were then introduced to your father and presented to the public as Arne Beaumont's daughter which is your father's younger deceased brother.

Only the people of the Beaumont estate and the Bergmann family knew of your real identity.

"A cover up. Its smart, but risky." He commented.

You couldn't say if you were friends with Nikolai, but the both of you sorted things up and cleared the misunderstanding. He also inquired about some details about your personal life, implying that he did not have a chance to be acquainted and to be familiar with Eugene's sister whom he always mentioned to him.

You were surprised of what he told you since you always thought that Eugene never mentioned of your identity to anyone. But realizing that Nikolai wasn't just anyone to your brother, it made you feel relieved that he had someone to talk to about what's happening with his life.

"He said you were smart and really talented with the ODM gear." Nikolai gave you a smirk, which you perceievd that he was somehow teasing you. "And you beat up his personal bodyguard." You rolled your eyes at him.

You urged him to tell you more about his relationship with Eugene, but he just kept on telling you that they were together for a year and that he made the first move. You wanted to know how they both met but he dodged the topic and you realized that maybe he still has a hard time talking about it, so you decided to stop inquiring more.

"So, you're telling me, you didn't have the opportunity to have a certain someone in your life?" Nikolai eyed you with a suspicious look. You already finished the "task" assigned to you and you were currently getting rid of the dirt on your skin from scrubbing the stables.

"I received a couple of proposals, but father turned them down. Probably afraid that someone would leak my identity."
