Chapter 16: Peculiarities

The funeral for the soldiers quickly came to an end as the bodies retrieved were too much to look at, which resulted to a closed casket. Although the families of the perished were quite thankful that the corpse of their own blood was retrieved, they weren't happy of the idea that the results of the expedition garnered no progress. The only progress was that the dead bodies kept on increasing and Erwin was receiving too much criticism from both the civilians and the military police.

Speaking of the military police, they wanted to get hold of Eren since they kept on insisting how the kid was a magnet for danger and most of the higher ups indicated that they were not allowing another expedition anytime soon. The survey corps were being driven to the corner and the responsibility to keep the situation controlled, was undoubtedly given to Erwin.

He also informed you of the situation regarding Annie Leonhart, which he focused on as soon as the survey corps arrived at Trost district. He gave you the files of Annie and included, was her accurate sketch, which you quickly confirmed without hesitation.

Turns out, you're not just imagining things. Erwin then concluded that you somehow had a peculiar gift that allowed you to venture into one's memories (or a fragment of it) once you made contact or just managed to touch any part of their body. You then verified that it was not only applicable to titan shifters since the moment you touched the commander's hand, you got images of Marie. Marie, whom he was infatuated with during his prime years and was now the wife of his former best friend. You didn't expect to see something so private and completely had no connection with the titans. Erwin then dismissed your apology to intrude on his past affairs since he was the one who asked if you could demonstrate the peculiar occurrence to him.

However, it doesn't consistently work and it was only limited to 1 or 2 tries. The first was with Annie and next was the commander. He then instructed you to try it on the blonde boy, who introduced himself as Armin. He was a part of the new recruits of the survey corps and surprisingly, he was Eren's childhood friend, along with Mikasa. They were both introduced to you inside Erwin's office since he needed them for the mission that was supposed to take place in the Stohess district a few days later. Armin had his suspicions about Annie the moment she removed his hood and reacted on how he screamed about Eren being a suicidal bastard. The appearance of the female titan was also directed towards Annie and thus, your vision was also helpful in confirming that she was indeed the culprit of annihilating a number of the scouts.

You placed your hand on Armin's and tried to pick up anything by closing your eyes and concentrating on what you had to do. After a few attempts, you failed to obtain a fragment of his memory which led Armin and Erwin to conclude that your ability has its limitations as well, and just like Eren, you needed to practice.

Seeing a fragment of the past was of big help to confirm the identity of the female titan and calculate the possible events that are about to occur but if, and only if you were able to foresee or anticipate both the past and the future, then that would be of importance to finally get ahold of the knowledge to how humans could shift into titans and possibly, the history of how the titans originated and on how to finally get rid of every last one of them. Though of course, there is no guarantee of that happening any time soon since you barely know a thing about it.

"Although there is a possibility that what you have is......genetically i-inherited." Armin hesitantly suggested.

Of course, Erwin thought. Most definitely it has a connection of how the Beaumont clan, your clan resided on the inner walls of Mitras, the most protected capital of Eldia, and not just on Wall Rose or at any district. He always knew that your father was more than just a prominent Marquess who was also the head of the inner council of the King. He was a man who possessed both knowledge and wisdom that was exceeding than that of any nobleman that Erwin met. Book knowledge was one thing, but the man's philosophies and rationality was uncommon, perhaps too rare for someone who hasn't lived that long.
