Chapter 15: The encounter with the female titan

You felt the gush of fresh air brush against your body as soon as you left the district of Trost. You received another scolding from the commander as he reminded you for the hundredth time, to stop sightseeing and actually focus on the field since titans could appear any moment. You couldn't help but admire the scenery as the vast mountains and clear skies welcomed your eyes. The view was breathtaking indeed, compared to the inner walls which lacked the touch and essence of a broad landscape which was admired and feared at the same time since it is where the monstrous creatures feed on your kind. The scenery was different from your previous mission which took place a month ago since it was just near the border of Krolva district.

"Fire the smoke signal." You heard the commander order you which made you immediately straighten yourself to avoid another scolding. "Yes sir." You reached for the green smoke signal and positioned it directly to the sky as you pressed the trigger, resulting to another change of formation.

It has been around 20 minutes and there were minimal casualties on the left flank but the right flank, suffered an amount of damage. Word got to your formation that a female abnormal titan gathered a bunch of titans and almost annihilated the said formation. NIkolai Dietrich was then instructed by the commander to relay the message on the center flank where squad Levi and Eren are positioned at. Nikolai mouthed you a see you later and you did the same. You haven't seen Nikolai in action, yet he was one of the most reliable soldiers that Erwin trusts and his strength was said to almost rival that of Mike Zacharias. You knew he was going to be safe yet you couldn't help but worry. He was one of the first few friends you had in the scouts after all, and he was your brother's partner. Anyone special to Eugene, is the same to you.

You were quite surprised when you saw the Titan forest becoming closer. You glanced at the Commander to see if he really intended for your group and the ones near to proceed towards the forest and you noticed that his demeanor was the same as usual. Serious, unyielding, and evaluating the current situation to draw up another plan in case what he had in mind right now would fail. Your first encounter with the commander made you admire his wit and the way how he carried himself with dignity and pride. He was known to be a monster for abandoning his humanity, yet the man never imposed or seeked approval and respect from others, as it came naturally.

"Commander, we're entering....the forest." You managed to say, which was neither a question and a statement as you were confused of what was going on. Erwin had no plans to avoid the forest as your horses got nearer and he never informed you regarding this part.

"Watch your surroundings, Cassandra. Hange's squad already cleared some of the titans but be on high alert. Understand?" As soon as those words slipped off of his mouth, your hunch was confirmed. There was something going on and they were using the center flank as bait. You were not informed and most likely, only the veterans were aware of what Erwin had in plan. Sooner or later, you're gonna have to find out.

"Yes sir." You still found it weird how the commander called you by your first name but you didn't bother correcting him about it. Although you loved people calling you your fake name Belova, hearing your real name isn't that bad, as long as they don't call you by your real last name.

"Good."

Your senses heightened, expecting an ugly ass titan to emerge anytime soon. Although your focus was now adamant compared to the first few minutes, you couldn't help but feel nervous about this particular mission. Sure, you were only exposed to titan territory twice but you could sense a possible and imminent threat by your sharp senses, that you managed to develop after Eugene's murder.
