The entire walk home I was thinking about how this project would actually going to pan out, would he actually help, would this be an even effort of work, or was him giving me his contact enough work for him.

I didn't know.

The thoughts danced around my head as I turned the last corner, my house was there as usual but a new car parked in the driveway.

"Hello?" I called out, hearing someone rummaging around inside looking for something.

"OH, Sweetheart is that you!?"

I knew that voice all too well.

"Mom?" I called out in hesitation, I knew it was her but I just didn't want to believe it.

She managed to crawl herself out from the back seats of the car, fixing her hair before turning to look at me.

She was wearing a tight, knee length dress, glittering jewelry, bright makeup, the highest possible heels.

"Oh baby, I missed you so much!!" She pouted, performing that classic baby-step heel run towards me with her arms wide open, clenching me in her arms.

Her body squeezed mine, trapping me with my arms down at my sides and my back straight.

"What are you doing here." I asked, half angry, half sad, and a smidge happy but that was only because I hadn't seen her in a while.

"I came to see you.. and your dad." She spoke, pulling away from the hug with a regretful expression, looking at me with her hands on my shoulders.

"Why would you come to see dad." I asked, pushing her hands off of my shoulders, starting to raise my voice a little.

"He and I have something to sort out." She said, in full seriousness.

"Haven't you sorted enough out with him." I sneered, my face painted with disbelieve, not the shocking kind but the fed up kind.

She didn't say anything in return, she only looked at me, her expensive, tacky taste blocking my nostrils with the smell of fast fashion and her new boyfriends money.

"You didn't text me, not once. I know you see my messages." I add, looking at her then focusing my gaze on the vehicle behind her. "You bought a new car as well."

She turned around to look at it with me, I hoped on everything that she was reflecting in that moment.

"Yes, well, I need to speak to Joe, about him and you living together."

My heart dropped at her words.

"Why is there a problem with me staying with dad." I question, starting to raise my voice a little louder.

"Honey, your father has issues, he can't always rely on alcohol and.." She starts, lowering her voice before she continues. "And drugs.."

I rolled my eyes, facing away from her with my hands on my temples.

"Don't stand there and judge him, if you didn't run off with that Australian dickhead he would still be in therapy working things out."  I say, starting to shout. "Now look at him. He can't even leave the house." My words were starting to choke me, tears itching to be released.

"Y/n, don't start shouting at me, i'm your mother." She says, extending her back to make herself taller, just when I thought there was a flicker of fight in me, the flame died out, whilst everything she had done was wrong, she had raised me to be frightened of her.

I felt like a rabbit, standing under the shadow of a tiger, ready to pounce.

"I only want what's best for you." She shouted.
