Emily: "If my mother could, she would pick up the shards of my shattered life and cut me with them." Chika Unigwe.

It was a few weeks later, and Emily found herself in an unusual situation. The woman looked down at her watch and sighed. Emily was trying to be more athletic. Keyword: trying. She bent over and tried to catch her breath. Emily was about half a mile from home and was mentally trying to push herself.

Note to self: bring JJ so she wouldn't lose motivation halfway through the run. But, the blonde woman in question was peacefully asleep. Emily didn't want to bother her beauty sleep and just decided to go on her own. She was gone for maybe about an hour and a half.

Emily jogged the entire way back to the house and sighed in relief as she made it to the front door. She punched in the code on the door and was breathing heavily as she walked into the house. Emily looked over at the living room and waved as she made her way to the kitchen. "Good morning, honey...mom."

Emily paused as she realized who exactly was in the living room. God, she wished she could disappear at any given time.

"Well, good morning to you too, honey," Elizabeth said sarcastically as Emily scrunched her face up and turned back around. JJ sat there in leggings, her sleep shirt, and a cardigan over herself. Her hair was still messy from sleep. Thankfully the boys weren't up yet.

"Mom. What, uh, what are you doing here? How did you find me here?" Emily asked and was literally at a loss for words. She didn't even tell her mother about her ending her engagement and being in a relationship now with a woman. Nor about the new house.

"Can't I drop by to visit my favorite daughter and her—newest lover?" Elizabeth said and gestured to JJ. The two lovers just pursed their lips.

"Well, I'm your only daughter, firstly," Emily said and stepped down the stairs into the living room. "And of course, but I'd like a heads up."

"A heads up?" Elizabeth asked and raised her eyebrows.

Here we go.

Emily clenched her jaw as she looked at her mother. JJ sank back into her seat on the couch.

"Yes, a heads up. This is my house, for God's sake. I deserve some privacy in my own home," Emily said and pulled up her shirt to wipe the sweat off of her face. Elizabeth's eyes were catching the tattoo on her daughter's body. She only sat taller. Emily realized what she did and immediately put down her shirt.

"Well, I wouldn't need to give you a heads up if you were actually interested in talking to your mother," Elizabeth said and crossed her legs.

"Why? So we can fight? Yeah, no thanks," Emily said and turned her back.

"Why didn't you tell me you ended your engagement with Aaron?" Elizabeth said and followed after her daughter. JJ scratched the back of her neck and wanted to be anywhere else in the world at the moment.

"Because it's nothing that concerns you," Emily said and walked into the kitchen. JJ, after much debate, decided to follow the women. Emily probably needed emotional support, so JJ was happy to give that to her.

"Really, Emily?" Elizabeth said and set down her purse on the counter. Emily grabbed a water from the fridge and practically chugged it. "This is something I need to know about."
