"4B's got post-op pneumonia. Let's start antibiotics." Leo was listening to an intern talking to a nurse. The resident was flipping through a chart for one of his own patients who he planned on checking on later with his interns. He had actually allowed them to do a few things now which left him alone for a good amount of time.
"Are you sure that's the right diagnosis?" The nurse asked actually concerned for the patient.
"Well I don't know, I'm only an intern. Here's an idea, why don't you go spend four years in med school and let me know if it's the right diagnosis." The intern said. Leo started to walk towards the intern wanting him to learn what manners were. If no one else would teach him Leo sure would She's short of breath, she's got fever, she's post-op. Start the antibiotics." The intern started to walk away and Leo didn't go after him.
"I hate interns" Leo mumbled as he started down a hallway looking for something that might need to be done. The resident saw a few nurses running towards a room which caught his attention, he didn't hesitate to follow. He entered a room where a young girl laid on the bed having seizures.
"Page the doctor on her chart." Leo said to one of the nurses. Another started giving the girl Diazepam which is exactly what Leo would have suggested. Before the resident said anything else one of the interns ran in. It was one of Bailey's interns.
"She's having multiple grand mal seizures, now how do you want to proceed? Dr. Grey? Are you listening to me? She's got Diazepam, 2mg Diazepam, I just gave her a second ago, Dr. Grey, you need to tell us what you want to do. Dr Grey!" Tyler, the male nurse in there, said to the intern.
"Grey think" Leo said hanging picking up the chart for the girl and handing it to the intern.
"Okay, she's full on Prazepam?" Meredith Grey asked.
"She's had 4mg." The nurse said
"Did you page Dr. Bailey and Dr Shepherd?" Meredith said.
"The Prazepam's not working." Tyler said.
"Phenobarbital, load her with Phenobarbital."
"Pheno's in." Another nurse said.
"No change." Leo said after a moment.
"You paged Dr. Shepherd?" Meredith said.
"I just told you." One of the nurses said not very happy
"Well page him again! Stat."
"What do you want to do?" Leo said calmly to the intern. "Dr. Grey, you need to tell us what you want to do!"
"Heart's stopped!" Tyler said. Leo looked at the monitor.
"Damn it Grey" Leo cursed as the nurses prepared the defibrillators. The resident was about to go and do it but the intern seemed to start working again and ran over. Leo watched as Meredith gave commands and others listened as the intern tried to save the girl. Leo let out a small breath of relief at the monitor started to beep again showing the girls heart rhythms.
"What the hell happened?" Derek Shepherd had just run into the room.
"She had a seizure, and her heart stopped." Meredith said. Leo took this as a time to leave letting the patient be taken care of by the neurosurgeon now.
Leo spun in a chair which sat behind the nurses station. He had been talking with them getting the rundown making sure they had not noticed anything off with his patients. The resident saw three of his four interns standing in front of the desk waiting for him to say something to them or anything.
"Nope, you three are being handed off to Dr. Shepherd today, he wants all the interns he can get so go" Leo waved them away.
"But-"
"Nope Porter, walk away quickly." Leo said. The group started to walk away but stopped when they heard Leo's pager and their resident started to say one word over and over again. "No.. no.. no!" The resident stood up and started running down one of the hallways. The interns followed him but were almost instantly shut out of the room after a crash cart was brought into the room. A code blue had been called and that's when the other interns there noticed.
"I'm sorry.. I'm sorry" Theo said as he walked out of the room which he had been thrown out of by their not happy resident.
"What did you do?" Arthur asked.
"I didn't do anything."
"Dr. Sloan I-"
"Back away right now Woods." Leo said walking past his interns. The group had seen the resident look annoyed before but never directly mad, at least not like this. "Just.. go! Dr. Shepherd wanted you all so go!" The resident walked past them and headed off to do whatever the resident did when he disappeared away from everyone.
Leo ran his fingers through his messy blond hair as he made his way out of the hospital and to an area which was not so crowded so he could get some fresh air. Just earlier Leo had watched Meredith Grey in a very similar situation and he let the intern try to handle it so what made this situation different? Everything was different about it. The intern in the latest was his own and at least the other intern had started moving after a moment.
"Damn it!" Leo yelled as he turned towards the wall and punched it. Leo let out a small gasp as he shook his hand. He didn't get angry a lot like this but when an intern messes up under his watch.. yeah he was going to be angry. Not at the intern though, at himself.
Leo had watched a blond female intern walk over to Bailey like she was going to risk waking the resident. There was a moment that Leo thought it was going to happen but then the girl walked away. Leo rubbed his fingers on one hand against the knuckles on the other trying to ease the slight bit of pain that was there.
"Wise choice" Leo said gaining the girls attention before she walked past him.
"Are you watching me?"
"No, well for a moment yeah. I wanted to see if someone was brave enough to wake Bailey" Leo walked forward. "What did you need from her anyway?"
"Well, um" The girl tried to figure out what to say to the resident who was not her resident.
"Come on I'll help you" Leo said. He had caught the number on the chart which the intern held. The resident looked around for a second. "Blackwell! Come with us" The intern quickly came over.
"This is my-"
"Yeah your patient, I am not stealing them and my intern isn't either don't worry" Leo said. The group of three started to walk down a hallway. "I have to teach my interns as well."
"I'm Dr. Leo Sloan" Leo introduced himself guessing he would have to work with the other intern eventually.
"Isobel Stevens but people call me Izzie" the female intern said.
"Kase Blackwell" Leo's intern introduce himself. Kase held his hand out for Izzie to shake but got ignored. Leo held back a laugh at the boys failed attempt to talk to Izzie.
"Second smartest choice you have made today. Good job." Leo commented.
"If you need something and don't want to wake Bailey you can come find me. If it's something I have taught you already then don't expect me to be happy about it if you wake me up to teach you." Leo said. The resident gave a two finger salute as he walked away from the two interns to try and find somewhere to get some sleep that night.
