Chapter 20: Better Run For Cover

{André's p.o.v.}

I sat down in one of the only remaining chairs in La Café Musain, and leaned my crutch up against the side of the chair. It was then that I heard footsteps above me... And a voice.

"Phantom faces at the window, phantom shadows on the floor, empty chairs at empty tables, where me friends will meet no more! Oh my friends, my friends, don't ask me what your sacrifice was for! Empty chairs at empty tables where my friends will sing no more..."

"Marius!" I shouted, grabbing my crutch and limping to the base of the stairs.

He heard me, and ran down the steps, scooping me up with his good arm. His other arm was bandaged, like mine was. "Andy!" he cried, tears steaming down his face as he hugged me to his chest with his good arm, and kissed my forehead. "Andy!" he repeated. "Marius!" I said, crying as well.

Footsteps turned both of our heads. "Andy, I'd like you to meet Cosette," said Marius softly, putting me down so I could turn to face the woman standing in the doorway of the Café. I leaned on my crutch and looked at her for a moment before smirking, and saying, "So... you're the girl Marius would never shut up about."

Cosette laughed, coming over to us, and Marius laughed softly as well. "My love, this is André, Enjolras' younger sister."

Cosette smiled at me and nodded. "We have to go," she then said quietly to Marius. He looked at her, and then at me, and then back at her. "Andy," he said slowly, "Why don't you come with us?"

"What?" I asked, taken aback. Cosette looked at Marius for a moment, and then nodded, smiling. "Enjolras was one of Marius' best friends. The least we can do is take you in."

I grinned from ear to ear. "You would do that?" I asked. Marius and Cosette smiled, nodding. "Thank you," I whispered, hugging them both.

Marius and Cosette brought me with them as they left the Café. I cast a glance in the direction of where the cart had been before, but it, along with the soldiers pulling it, and the bodies inside of it, were gone.

-------

Cosette had bought me a dress; a real, fancy, expensive, dress.

Marius and Cosette had finally gotten married.

I twirled as best I could in my dress, leaning heavily on my crutch, as I watched all of the couples dancing about. The couples were all dressed in fancy, expensive clothes as well.

There were tables piled high with food everywhere in the ballroom, and I couldn't help but think of my fellow thieves that I had left when I went to fight with the boys on the barricade.

They were probably getting rather hungry...

I glanced down at my dress. Dresses didn't have pockets, I realized.

A grin slowly spread across my face as I limped out of the ballroom and back to the room Marius and Cosette had given me.

I changed back into my normal attire, topping off my outfit with my jacket and my cap. I then made my way back to the ballroom, and began to fill my pockets with food, smirking slightly.

Before anyone could notice what I was doing, I left, hobbling through the streets of Paris once more. I put my fingers to my lips and whistled three times. The pitter-patter of children's feet reached my ears, and as I went, my thoughts went to my fallen best friend. Without thinking, I began to sing...

"Little people know, when little people fight, we may look easy pickings but we got some bite! So never kick a dog, because it's just a pup!

We'll fight like twenty armies and we won't give up!

So you better run for cover when the pup grows up!"

((So... That's it! Well, not technically, because I have an epilogue for you guys, but after that... It's over! I hope you guys like what I've done with this! I've been going back and editing and adding to the earlier chapters, so if you guys feel like it, you can go take a look at the stuff I've changed, but if not, thank you so much for reading Better Run For Cover! Please comment and vote! I love you all! -Wolf))
