Chapter 14: Javert at the Barricade and A Little Fall of Rain
{André's p.o.v.}
"He's back!" shouted Coufeyrac as the man came into view on the far side of the barricade.
"Listen my friends, I have done as I said. I have been to their lines, I have counted each man. I will tell what I can." The man took a deep breath and went on. "Better beware, they have armies to spare. Now the danger is real, we will need all our cunning to bring them to heel." From the top of the barricade, Enjolras nodded, beckoning for the man to come over to the other side of the barricade. As he passed me, I saw his face.
It was Javert.
"Have faith," said my brother softly, climbing back down the barricade. "If you know what their movements are, we will spoil their game. There are ways that a people can fight. We shall overcome their power." Javert was now surrounded by the students, and I caught his eye for a moment, trying to figure out exactly what he was doing here. "I have overhead their plans, there will be no attack tonight. They intend to starve you out before they start a proper fight. Concentrate their force, hit us when it's light."
"LIAR!" Gavroche's shout broke through everyone's thoughts and caused them to turn and look at him. His eyes were gleaming with malice, and I knew that my friend had figured out that this was Monsieur Javert.
"Good evenin', dear Inspector, lovely evening my dear."
Enjolras slowly turned to look at Javert again, and Javert slowly looked away. I swear I saw a flash of fear in his eyes. "I know this man my friends, 'is name's Inspector Javert!" crowed Gavroche.
Javert moved to run and the boys were on him immediately, restraining him. "So don't believe a word he says, cause none of it's true! This only goes ta show what little people can do!"
Courfeyrac and Grantaire stood on either side of Javert, each holding one of his arms. "Bravo little Gavroche, you're the top of the class!" said Courfeyrac, throwing him a grin.
"So what are we gonna do with this snake in the grass?" asked Combeferre.
"Take this man and throw him in the tavern, in there," announced Enjolras, "The people will decide your fate, Inspector Javert."
"Shoot him!" shouted someone. Every man not involved in restraining Javert was holding him at gunpoint. I however, did not. My pistol remained in the hand that hung at my side. I just stood there, watching the scene unfold, and wondering why I wasn't feeling anything good. Shouldn't I be happy that the man who had arrested me had been caught himself? I looked away for a moment, before Javert's next words drew my eyes once more to him.
"Shoot me now, or shoot me later! Every school boy to his spot! Death to each and every traitor, I renounce your people's court!" He glared at me for a moment before Courfeyrac and Grantaire began to drag him away towards the tavern.
"We keep looking forward!" shouted Marius as he turned away from Javert.
A shout however, drew his attention once more as Javert threw Grantaire into a wall, and Courfeyrac to the floor a moment later. His fist then connected with Enjolras' face. "Ey!" I shouted, finally moving. Nobody was allowed to punch my brother. I ran towards Javert, my pistol in my hand as Javert reached behind a cabinet and pulled out his police man's baton. The baton connected with Feuilly's shoulder, but then Enjolras managed to grab the baton from him and with a crack, it connected with Javert's head, knocking him out cold.
