Chapter 12: One Day More

{André's p.o.v.}

A day later, the boys had once again gathered at La Café Musain. Today however, something was different. The air smelled of metal, gunpowder, and wine, and talk of the revolution swirled about the room.

I followed Enjolras around like his shadow, a small pistol in my hand. Grantaire had given it to me, saying that I might need it in the coming days. Gavroche was there as well, and Courfeyrac had given him a pistol too.

The students had been joined by many commoners as well, who were helping out by lending us guns and ammunition for the fighting we knew lay ahead. Men were melting any bits of metal they could find into bullets and others were cleaning and polishing pistols and muskets so they would be ready for use when the time came. As we continued to work, people continued to join us, until the Café was filled with people, and many more milled about outside in the street.

As I followed my brother out into the street, I couldn't help but notice that Marius was nowhere to be found. Perhaps he had gone off in search of that girl he hadn't been able to shut up about. Cosette, I think her name was. But, my mind was drawn away from this thought as Enjolras shouted to the skies.

"One more day before the storm!" The people in the street turned to him, their expressions eager and excited.

"At the barricades of freedom!" he shouted, moving back inside.

"When our ranks begin to form, will you take your place with me?" I grinned and nodded from where I stood beside him. All around us, people began to nod as well.

Then, along with the people in the street and the boys in the Café around us, my brother and I shouted at the top of our lungs. "The time is now, the day is here!"

It was then that I noticed Monsieur and Madame Thenárdier moving about, snatching pistols and coins from the students who were slowly but surely falling into a stupor due to the wine they were drinking.

Narrowing my eyes, I followed them, stealing back most of what they had taken and returning it to its rightful owner before they even noticed it was missing. The Thenárdiers gave me a dirty look, but didn't dare do anything with all the boys there.

"One day to a new beginning!" crowed the students.

"Raise the banner of freedom high! Every man will be a king!"

"Every man will be a king," I repeated, grinning from ear to ear.

"There's a new world for the winning!" shouted the people.

"There's a new world to be won," Gavroche yelled with me, "Do you hear the people sing?" shouted everyone at once.

This was when Marius finally decided to make his appearance. In his hand was the red flag of the revolution, and he raised it over his head, saying, "My place is here, I fight with you!"

"Yeah!" Gavroche and I crowed at once, punching our fists in the air and grinning at Marius, who grinned back. My brother smiled and nodded at Marius, who nodded his head in acknowledgement as well.

As he moved to stand beside Enjolras, Gavroche, and I, we shouted once more to the heavens. "Tomorrow is the judgement day! Tomorrow we'll discover what our god in heaven has in store! One more dawn! One more day! One. Day. More!"

In the Café, and on the streets as well, everywhere I looked, I saw people waving flags to represent our revolution.

I saw fists and guns raised in the air.

I saw the defiant expressions of people who would not go down without a fight.

And I was happy to be a part of it all.
