Time has magically flown quickly. It’s been a week since the graduation ceremony and mom’s birthday dinner. This is it, this is the time where it all will begin. This is a new adventure, a new life, a new start. The future plan that Andy and I started three years ago is finally starting today. The journey to the airport was a blur, and as if the world was fast-forwarded.
Uncle Ben and Josh left for San Diego a couple of days ago, so it was just mom with Andy and I. The three of us were in the airport, and Andy’s arm was slung around mine as we were saying goodbye to mom. “You two have grown up so fast!” My mom started as she swung her arms around us. “I can’t believe your leaving already!”
“Us too, mom…” Andy muttered,
“I still remember you kids in diapers like it was yesterday…” She smiled with a slight tad of sadness. Andy and I just laughed, we didn’t know what to say or even do. It was one of those moments were you just want everything to stop and be still. “Listen, I want the both of you to take care of each other. Andy, take good care of your sister and you too Ally! Take good care of your brother! Promise me that! Take very good care of yourself!”
“I will, mom. Don’t worry, I got this!” Andy replied with a confident smile,
“Yes, mom.” I replied with an obedient nod. We pulled away from each other and we just awkwardly stood there.
“Oh, and behave!” Mom playfully scolded, Andy and I managed to let a little smile crawl to our faces. We talked more until the intercom announced our flight. We all stood silent, begging for this moment to stop, but it’s not possible. Andy did not say anything, he just hugged mom and both of them stood silently.
“Thank you, mom…” He mumbled,
“For what?”
“I don’t know…” Andy shrugged, “For everything… Everything that you did, both indirectly and directly… Yea, whatever that means…”
“I’m so proud of you!” Mom tightened her grip. Andy lifted his head up and faced me. He then pulled me on the wrist and I was pulled to him. We had a group hug and earned a few confused faces, but we didn’t care. I gained the strength to pull away before Andy.
“I’ll be seeing you again, mom!” I kissed her cheek,
“Bye, mom!” Andy kissed her forehead,
“Take care, kids!” She waved as we walked in towards the gate,
“I love you!” Andy and I cried in unison. Mom just smiled, holding back her tears and watched us disappear inside.
“Here we go!” Andy tried to sound peppy,
“It’s finally happening…”
“Are you nervous?”
“I don’t know, a little… Are you?”
“A lot actually…”
“What am I going to do there?” I looked him in the eyes,
“What do you mean?”
“I’m not starting college until next year, I hope, I have nothing to do there. What should I do when we get there? Be unemployed?” I lazily shrugged,
“Don’t say that. Remember your scholarship?”
“I haven’t heard from them…” I sighed,
“Don’t worry, you will soon! You got this! You can trust me on that!” He nudged me, trying to motivate me. “If you don’t make it, you’ll have me!” He pinched my cheek, he still does that until now. “You can stay with me and we’ll all be happy!”
“Andy, I’m bored being stuck with you for almost eighteen years!”
“Really?” He smirked, raising both his eyebrows.
“No.” I pouted and he just nodded because he was right, like almost always. “Let’s just see what happens next…”
