Steve's POV
How could I let this happen again? How could I injure this beautiful woman twice in less than 4 days? I walk to my room as fast as I can after I leave the infirmary. I close the door and unleash hell. I start throwing things across the room, breaking whatever my hands could find. I sit on my chair and realize what I did. She wouldn't want me to do this. She'd want me to fight for her.
I change into my gym clothes and find myself endlessly punching the punching bag. Nothing runs through my mind except for Faye's beautiful voice. My brain is on repeat with her laugh, her smile, the way she held me. I'm soon taken out of my thoughts when someone behind me coughs.
"Man, you gotta stop falling for women so easily," Bucky teases from behind me. I can't help but let out a slight laugh. He's not wrong, but I know with Faye, it's different. He walks up to me and pats my back. "Letting out a little steam?"
I chuckle at his remark.
"More like letting out pent up frustration," I say with a heavy sigh. Bucky knows me too well. I continue hurting the punching bag while Bucky leans against the post. He knows that being there helps more than talking. I've just never had to deal with this before. I turn to Bucky with sadness in my eyes.
"I can't lose her man," I say, "I can't."
"I know, buddy, I know."
I stare at the clock and realize I've been here for a couple of hours. I didn't think time would pass by so fast. But that's the thing, she's not here. So, I'm just losing.
"I'll meet you upstairs for dinner, yeah? Hit the shower. I'll see you soon," Bucky says and pats my back before leaving. I nod in agreement. I head towards my room with a heavy heart. How could I let this happen? How could I let this happen again?
I take a long, hot shower, trying to find something else to concentrate on. The clock hits 9:00 p.m. We were supposed to go on our first official date tonight. I've learned so much about Faye these last few days. It felt right for us to go on an actual date instead of wallowing in bed or fighting bad guys. I couldn't even get to have one date before the universe took her away from me. I change into my clothes and clean up the mess I created earlier. I can't have my room looking like this when she comes back.
If she comes back.
I shake the thought of it and make my way to the dining area. Sam, Griffin, Bucky, Wilson, and Rhodey sit by the table with some beer and pizza. I let out a small smile. They greet me and open a bottle for me. We sit and talk for a couple of hours, just enjoying each other's company. Then, FRIDAY's system blares over us.
"GUYS, YOU'RE GOING TO WANT TO SEE THIS!" Tony yells over the system. The 6 of us run to the lab, where Faye is strapped to the table. I don't know why she is, but I don't question it. We are working with sorcery. I look at my watch and see that it's almost 3 in the morning. It's been almost 12 hours since Faye's been out.
"Tony, what the hell is going on?" I ask him impatiently. Within a couple of minutes, everyone floods the lab, including Clint, who is now okay.
"So if we bypass the synapse and enter her brain via EEG, it should activate the neurons," he says to Banner.
"Well that's a long shot, but yeah, it's our only chance," Banner replies.
"Okay kids. Let's see daddy work his magic," Tony says. He presses some buttons which sends tiny electric shocks through the wires that are connected to her brain.
"Tony, are you hurting her?" Griffin asks.
Suddenly, Faye's body moves and she lets out a small scream.
"WHERE AM I? WHY AM I TIED TO A TABLE?" She yells.
"KID, RELAX, IT'S ME!" Tony yells, trying to calm her down. She has fear in her eyes, but her eyes make her way to mine and she relaxes a little.
"WAIT STOP!" She yells before relaxing. "TELL ME SOMETHING ONLY YOU AND I WOULD KNOW, IF THIS IS REALLY YOU."
"Um, well, you dated a drug deal-" Tony says and I turn my head to him.
"OKAY STOP I GUESS I'M BACK!" She sighs in relief. What does she mean "back"? I run towards her and kiss her.
She's back. She came home.
I can't help but let the tears roll down my face. She notices and tries to wipe my face before she realizes that she's strapped to the table.
"Tony, you're lucky I'm a kinky girl or else I wouldn't have appreciate this," she jokes and I can't help but chuckle when I see Tony's face turn white. "I'M KIDDING! Relax old man, it's a joke." I see the hidden wink she gives after she says that.
Oh baby, you have no idea what I'm going to do to you soon.
I begin to unbuckle the straps and embrace her in a hug, not wanting to let go.
"Come on Cap, give the rest of us a turn," Griffin says. Sam and Griffin both go up to Faye and engulf her in a hug. I've never seen them so sad.
"Guys, come on. You know it's going to take a lot more than a girl with magical powers to knock me out. I'm fucking Lieutenant Commander Faye!" She exclaims and everyone lets out a laugh of ease.
"Faye, don't ever fucking scare us like that again!" Sam says with a stern voice.
She slides her legs off the table, but still sits on it. She massages her temples; she probably has a huge headache.
"Guys, as much as I love each and everyone of you, it's my duty as your leader to lay my life down on the line when I need too. I will never hesitate to do so. I do it to protect all of you," she says, "as much as you guys may hate me for it, I always prepare myself to quite literally take one for the team. Stop fucking crying and get back to work!" She then turns to the clock and realizes what time it is. "Never mind! Everyone go the fuck to sleep!" Everyone laughs and hug her before leaving to their rooms.
"By the way, we didn't tell Kris and Grace. They're still on their mission and we didn't want to compromise them," says Griffin. Faye smiles and hugs him one more time.
"I taught you well," she replies. Griffin and Sam leave together, leaving me, Faye, and Tony in the lab.
"I thought I lost you, kid. I just got you and I can't imagine what could have happened-" Tony says but is cut off by Faye. She grabs his hands and places them on her cheeks.
"I'm right here, Tony. I'm not going anywhere." She calmly replies. Tony kisses her forehead and walks to the elevator.
"Well Captain, could you please help me off this wonderful table? I think I'm ready for some snuggles and sleep," she says playfully. I grab her legs with one arm and wrap my arm around her shoulders. She wraps her arms around me and I carry her to her room. She floods my face with kisses the entire way. I close her door and aggressively drop her on her bed. She laughs the notion, but doesn't get too much laughter out after I lay on top of her and kiss her. We lay there with our tongues doing the familiar dance with each other for God knows how long. It isn't until we both run out of breath that we stop.
"I thought I lost you," I say to her and engulf her face with my hands. She's so tiny, but she's so strong.
"Oh baby. I promised I would always come home to you and I never intend on breaking that promise."
I get off of her and lay next to her. I hold her as close to me as I could, not wanting to spend another second apart. I can tell she fell asleep by the way her breathing regulates.
"And I will always come home to you," I say and plant a kiss on her forehead.
This is the life I want. This is the life I craved for before I went into the ice. I never expected to meet someone to change everything. Fuck, I'm glad she did.
