He was speechless. He had caught Furuya's monster fastballs, Eijun's annoying as hell moving fastballs, Kawakami's perfectly controlled fastballs, and Tanba's extreme curveballs. None of that could have prepared him for Alexia's pitches. She could place her fastballs in any corner he asked. Her cutter, shootball, and sinker were all not only perfectly placed, but the sharpness of their cut was incredible. He doubted that even the best batters would be able to hit a pitch that skimmed the strike zone before cutting in an inch from them. The control she demonstrated over her pitches made a shiver run down his spine. It just wasn't natural.
Alexia was speechless as well. She had abandoned the adjustments she had made during the game and was pitching the best she could to Miyuki. And he was catching them. He hadn't let a single fastball get past him and it had only taken him a few tries to be able to catch her breaking balls. Excitment bubbled in her stomach as she grinned like an idiot at the catcher who paused from throwing the ball back.
"Did you hit your head?" he asked, his brows drawing together as he lowered his arm, the ball still in his hand.
"No, no, sorry," Alexia said with a shake of her head. She looked back to him, his caramel eyes showing concern first and foremost, with amazement, disbelief, and what looked like fear lurking in the back. "I was just thinking that I'm glad that Fable isn't the only one who can catch my pitches so well." The grin was still plastered on her face, but Alexia made no move to erase it. She was happy, happier than she would have thought to find out that her choice had been correct.
"Don't you sound arrogant," the catcher teased and he threw the ball back to Alexia who rolled her eyes.
"I mean, I'm not stupid. I know my pitching is great and my control isn't exactly average," Alexia said. "There's still a lot of me to work on, but at this point, in order to get better I really need a catcher who can keep up with me."
Miyuki hummed. She wasn't wrong. Her pitching, the lack of power aside, was phenomenal. Her speed was about average but the movement of the pitches was not. Her form also added in another level, making it hard to time her throws. The way her arm came through so fast and sharp, it was like a whip, causing the ball to practically disappear until halfway to the plate. "So you came to find me, Tokyo's best catcher?" he teased, giving her a smug look, causing her to chuckle.
"Well, you're not entirely wrong," she admitted, rolling the ball in her fingers. Miyuki's eyebrows shot up, not expecting that response. "When I heard my dad and I were moving to Tokyo, I was worried about not having a good catcher. I figured, since my dad went to Seido and it was a good school, I'd go there, hoping for the best."
She lifted her eyes to his and Miyuki found himself drawn into the intense, yet calm, purple hue. Her eyes danced with excitement left over from pitching and a softness had replaced the challenge. It hit him, suddenly, that her eyes seemed to have so many shades to them, not one less entrancing than the last. The intense, sharp, and scary hue from when she was analyzing something. The calmer, soft, and understanding tint when she was being sincere or was listening to someone's complaints. The cloudy, darker tones when she was worried or anxious, like earlier when he had criticized her for her game performance. The openness and warmth that seemed to engulf everything that day the cashier had praised her. Her eyes had always been a shocking color of purple that he hadn't seen anywhere else, natural or unnatural, but it just suddenly occurred to him how her eyes shifted all the time.
A small smile snapped him out of his thoughts as her next words rang in his ears. "Then when I heard that Seido did in fact have an amazing catcher, and I saw some clips from his games, I knew that I would definitely be going here."
