As the movie continues Cherry's and my conversation does as well. I would be annoyed if I didn't already miss the first half of the film but considering the fact that I don't frankly know what is going on, I could care less about some friendly interruptions.
While people-watching, and trying to take in the feel for the group of people I am now destined to grow up with, I catch my eye on a group of boys who don't seem to fit in the same way Bob or David do. Their hair is filled with grease but this doesn't take away from the fact that their features are made of dreams.
"Who are they?" I ask Cherry pointing at the group of boys just now sneaking in.
"Ugh, they are just some greasers," Cherry replies after seeking them out, "Try to stay away from them. Sure some of them may look nice but they simply are trouble,"
"Greasers?"
"You've never heard the term Christine?"
"Well... no. I guess nicknames were different in the part of New York City I lived in," I mutter feeling slightly embarrassed.
"Well they are greasers, they are the clear definition of one. They are from the east side. Some see them as scum bags, they are all poor, and most of them criminals. Barely any of them actually made it through high school, half of them are simple dropouts," Cherry explains with a hint of disgust in her voice.
"Well, then what does that make us?" I ask glancing back at the greasers that just made their way inside.
"Some may call us socs'. Personally, I hate titles and hate being stereotyped as so," She began sounding quite hypocritical in comparison to her last statement. Surely not all of the greasers are bad, "We all live on the west side of town, just as I assume you do,"
"Yes," I confirm my focus still on the group of boys.
"Well, we are the higher class. I hate to say that we are superior but some live by that way of thinking,"
"I see..." I reply taking time to think. Sure I knew every city had its differences but I didn't think I would be seeing them so up close. Back in the part of New York City where I lived there was enough city to hide from the class norms. There were gangs and sides but I seemed to be protected and sheltered from all of that. It was easy to ignore the aggressive types, but even the lower class were nice. There is no room to be protected in such a small city, nowhere to hide.
"Oh great they are walking over," Cherry rolls her eyes finally catching the attention of her boyfriend Bob and the other 'socs'' that I have found myself to be hanging out with.
"Here comes the trash," Bob growls just as one of the older-looking greasers walks closer our way followed by a few more of his friends working as his shadow. The lighting is too dark to make out any details of their facial features but simply their stance alone is intriguingly handsome. I can't say that I am happy to be mixed up in all of this, and after catching a better glimpse at the greaser's dreamy appearance my want to run away and hide becomes even greater.
"What the hell are you scum bags doing here?" Randy growls following Bob and David out of their seats.
"Come on guys we don't want no trouble!" Cherry yells trying to stop whatever tension is brewing.
Their arguments are just muffled words from now on and all Cherry, Marcia, and I can do is watch. The one greaser that instigated the walk over towards us, the one with the handsome walk, is talking dangerously close to Bob and the idea of a fight is inevitable.
"Guys seriously lay off," Cherry yells once more this time getting up from her seat only to watch Bob pull the first Greasers shirt into land a punch.
From there a whole fight breaks out each boy fighting one another until some theater staff runs up to separate the brawl.
