Chapter 23

My mom was never a big nature person. Our front lawn is about as far as her care for nature goes. To put it plainly, I have never been camping before. I really didn't know what to expect. So, when I asked my mom if I could go camping with my friends she gave me a look. Then she proceeded to help me pack. After packing bear spray, bug repellant, and a fire blanket, I was rethinking everything.

Were there really going to be bears?

How many bugs are we talking?

What if we accidentally start a forest fire!?

"I also packed some allergy medicine you know how you get around pine trees."

"Okay mom," I complained.

"Oh, and you have a flashlight and a whistle in the left pocket in case you get lost."

"Mom."

"Don't forget to apply sunscreen, you know you burn easily."

Just then the horn to Archer's Volkswagen bus could be heard outside.

Saved at last.

"Okay mom, got to go, love you bye," I quickly ran out the door.

"And if you cut yourself don't forget to apply anti-bacteria cream!" she called after me.

I felt my face go beet red as everyone on the bus snickered at me. Jade ran out of her house and met me at the bus door. Wini opened the door for us. I gasped at the inside.

"I know right," Archer was beaming.

The interior is custom. There is a booth with a small table. A seat right behind the driver's seat. And a seat behind the passenger seat that can fold out into a bed. There are curtains on the windows and the floor looked like checkered tiles.

"You can put the bags up top," Archer said.

On top of the bus were two places to store bags or surfboards. Demarcus got out of the passenger seat to help Jade and I add our bags to the pile. After everything was secure, we all jumped in.

"Okay ladies, we got a long drive, so I brought everyone's favorite, Uno." Wini slapped the colored cards on the table.

I slid in next to Darleen and Jade sat across from me.

"Prepared to be destroyed," Darleen smirked.

"You are supposed to let me win." I pouted.

"No way, says who?" She said.

"Says girlfriend law."

"Well I've never heard that law, so it must not exist." She playfully bumps my shoulder.

I playfully bump her shoulder back.

Wini passed out the cards and Archer cranked up the toons. Demarcus is D.J. after about an hour and three games of Uno, all of which Wini won I might add, we got bored. We still had about two more hours before we got to the campsite.

Archer had to stop for more gas.

"She's a beauty, but she is also a gas guzzler. Alright everyone pee break, remember the only restroom in nature is the floor." He pointed out.

"You don't have to tell me twice." Jade jumped out of the bus.

"So this is the family bus?" I asked Archer.

"Yeah, I'm kind of nervous. It's like a right of passage for me. It was my grandfather's, and my father's when they were my age. Now it's mine and I get to keep up the tradition and break her in."
