Within seconds, both Jaime and Kane had shifted into their wolf form.

Jaime wasted no time. He let out a low, menacing growl and then launched himself at Kane. Jaime knocked into Kane with such force, that he knocked him to his back. Kane growled and snapped at Jaime, and he tried to clamp onto Jaime’s neck with his fangs.

Jaime batted away Kane’s muzzled, and he slashed the side of Kane’s face with his claws. Blood spurted from the wounds, and Kane moaned in pain and kicked Jaime off of him. Jaime twisted on the floor so that he was upright, and then Kane lunged at him.

As the two wolves fought, I scrambled to my feet and grabbed the handcuff that held Dot’s other wrist to the bed. While doing my best to ignore the pain, I snapped the chain and released her other wrist.

“Dot!” I said, touching the side of her face with my hand. The electricity I was so used to was gone, and I swallowed hard. “Dot, say something!” But it was no use; she was unconscious and her breathing was ragged.

Just as I reached for the handcuffs encircling her ankles, I heard a yelp of pain coming from the two battling wolves, and I looked over to see part of Jaime’s ear missing and blood streaming from the wound.

Instead of slowing him down, the injury seemed to give Jaime just the adrenaline kick he needed to finish Kane off. Jaime head-butted him, knocking Kane to the ground, and Jaime raked his claws repeatedly against Kane’s flank. When Kane tried to fight back, Jaime smashed his head into the ground and clamped his jaw down on Kane’s throat.

Kane thrashed and fought in an attempt to get loose, and despite his clawing hat any part of Jaime’s flesh that he could get at, Jaime’s grip was like iron. Pretty soon, Kane’s body started so slow down, and sure enough, after a few more minutes, it stopped moving completely.

I finished freeing Dot from her metal bonds, and then I glanced back at Jaime to see he still held Kane’s body in his mouth. “Jaime,” I said, taking a step towards him, “Jaime, you did it. You killed Kane, but you need to let go now.”

Jaime let out a growl, but after a minute, he released Kane and kicked him onto the floor. Then, he shifted back into his human form. There were tears in his eyes, and his face was red with a mixture of anger and despair.

“He killed my brother,” Jaime choked out, “He ripped out his throat.”

I laid a hand on Jaime’s hand and didn’t remove it when he flinched. “Kane’s dead,” I said slowly, “He can’t kill anyone anymore.” Jaime swallowed and nodded, and then his eyes fell on Dot’s limp body. “Is she dead?” he asked brokenly.

“No,” I replied firmly, and Jaime breathed out a sigh of relief. “We need to get her back home, though,” I continued, “She’s hurt, and I don’t know how badly. Dot needs medical attention.”

Jaime nodded again, but he didn’t move. I could understand what was going through his mind right now. It was the same thing that had I’d been thinking when Nina had been murdered. The emotional pain was overwhelming, and it just left you blank.

I leaned down and scooped Dot up into my arms. Her head lolled lazily against my shoulder, and I kissed the top of her head softly. Then, I gestured towards the door with my head, and Jaime exited the room with me following.
