“I don’t think I can deal with any more of this.”
I leaned back in my chair and let out a deep breath. This day was going terribly, and it was only getting worse. My pack was in the middle of a feud with another pack over some territory, which was clearly marked as ours, and I’d just gotten off a long conference call with the Alpha and Beta of their pack. They’d been completely stubborn.
“This is going to take longer than I expected to fix,” Jaime said from his seat across my desk.
“I know,” I replied tiredly, and I rubbed my forehead in frustration, “I just hope it doesn’t result in fighting.”
“Me too,” Jaime agreed, “The patrols on that border are tense.” I sighed, but just as I mentally added that to my list of things to worry about, Jaime said, “Don’t worry about it, though, because I have a handle on the patrols.”
“Have I told you that you’re a saint?” I asked, and Jaime chuckled, which made me smile. Because of Adam’s death, Jaime had become my Beta. Now, I couldn’t say anything as Adam for a Beta, but I was thankful I had Jaime. He had to mature a bit as the job became his, but Jaime was good at what he did.
“No need, Dot,” Jaime replied, and he glanced at his watch. “I have to go pick up Marina from work, but I’ll be back soon.”
“No worries,” I said with a dismissive wave of the hand, “Take Marina out for coffee or something.” Jaime gave me a mock salute and then walked out of my office, and I could tell he was excited to go pick up his mate.
Jaime had met Marina about two years after Adam’s death, when he’d been going through a reclusive period. He wouldn’t talk to me, Troy, or his parents, and then he found Marina wandering through the woods. She’d been visiting a nearby pack, but had gotten lost and ended up on our territory. Halfway through charging at her, Jaime felt the attraction, and the rest was history.
I downed the rest of the cold coffee in my mug, and I pulled my email up through the internet on my computer. I clicked on the first new email, but as soon as I started reading the ranting words from the Alpha I was fighting with, I just threw my hands in the air.
“I am just not dealing with this right now,” I muttered, and I pushed away from my desk and stood up. However, before I could go anywhere, there was a knock at my door. “Come in,” I called tiredly.
“Hey Mom.” I smiled as my ten-year-old daughter, Anna, walked into my office. “Dad’s looking for you.”
“Is he now?” I asked, walking around to the front of my desk.
“Yeah,” Anna replied, shoving her hands into the front pocket of her sweatshirt, “He said to tell you that Sam’s having a teenage girl moment and she needs her mom.”
“Ah,” I said, dramatically throwing my arm over Anna’s shoulder, and I led her out of my office. “I remember having those moments, and trust me, they are no fun.”
“Thankfully, I have two more years before puberty,” Anna said with a sigh, and she glanced up at me, “Can I go play video games now?”
“Sure, Honey,” I replied, and Anna grinned and hurried down the hall and into the living room. I watched her go with amusement, and then shook my head and hopped up the stairs. I walked down the hallway and turned a corner to see Eli sitting against the wall across from my sixteen-year-old daughter, Samantha’s, room.
