“This is all your fault!”
I pushed open the door to my dad’s office to find Eli pinned underneath him as my dad slammed his fist into the side of Eli’s face. “What are you doing?” I yelled, lunging towards them. I grabbed my dad’s arm as he landed another punch, and I yanked him back with all my strength.
“Dad, stop!” I screamed, clamping my hands on his shoulders. I was trying my best to hold him off of Eli, but my dad was stronger than me.
“Bo, stop right now!” Suddenly, my mom appeared by my side, and she took over my spot holding off my dad. At her touch, my dad suddenly froze, and his eyes connected with my mom’s. As she worked to calm him down, I knelt down next to Eli and gingerly wiped away the blood from the corner of his mouth and winced at the bruising at the top of his cheek.
“He’s right, Dot,” Eli mumbled as he pushed himself up into a sitting position.
“What are you talking about?” I asked, frowning at him.
“It is all my fault.”
“What’s all your fault?” I prodded, completely confused. I had a feeling that this was about whatever had been bothering him on the way home from the store, but I still had no idea what said thing was.
“Our daughter is going to be abducted thanks to that fucking boy!” My head snapped around to stare at my dad, whose finger was pointed firmly at my mate. I felt all the color drain from my face, and I turned slowly to look at Eli once more.
“What is he talking about?” I asked quietly, my voice quivering.
Eli sighed, and his head dropped to his hands as he thought for a moment. “Before I came here, I borrowed some money from a fellow rogue named Kane. When I got here, I was supposed to get a job to make the money I owed him so that I could pay him back when he called my debt.”
“You have a job, though,” I whispered, stating the obvious, “You got one at Rhett’s store.”
“Yeah, but I was so focused on working on my relationship with you and the pack, I haven’t logged the hours I needed, and it was a lot of money,” Eli stated sadly, and his eyes connected with mine. “When I went to get the burgers, Kane was there. He asked about the debt, and when I told him my problem about the money, he said he didn’t want it.”
“Then, what did he want?” my mom said, speaking up, but I think everyone in the room, including myself, already knew the answer.
“Dot.”
There was a moment of silence, and then my dad tried to get at Eli again. My mom grabbed my dad before he could, and we could all see the strength he was using to keep from shifting and tearing Eli to pieces.
“Dot,” my mom said, without looking at me, “Take Eli to your room while I calm your father down. Then, we can all talk about this with rational heads and figure out what we’re going to do.”
“Sure,” I replied, but I was really processing much. I stood up and started out of the room, with Eli quickly following. As we walked wordlessly through the hallways to my bedroom, I just stared straight ahead as the gears in my head spun around at double speed, trying to make sense of what had just happened.
