I hurried through the hallway, Adam at my side, and when I reached my dad’s office, I knocked twice on the door. When my dad said he needed me urgently, he was dead serious. It didn’t happen often, which just added to the knot of concern constricting in the pit of my stomach.
“Come in,” my dad called, and Adam and I slipped inside the office. My dad was standing up in front of his desk, with Uncle Patrick, Fae, Rhett, and Fletcher. All of them looked worried and deep in thought.
“What’s going on?” I asked, and my dad immediately held up a finger. I scowled at him but listened and remained silent.
“Wait one second,” he replied quickly, and he murmured words that I didn’t have time to listen in and catch. Uncle Patrick, Rhett, and Fletcher all nodded and walked quickly from the room, leaving Adam and I alone with our parents.
“Is something wrong?” Adam asked as we walked over to them. My dad and Fae exchanged glances, and the pain in my stomach intensified.
“We’ve had an increase in suspicious activity around the northern border of our territory,” Fae explained carefully, “So, we’ve been sending out a couple of extra patrols. About half an hour ago, our latest patrol came back and told us some alarming news.”
She paused, and whispered something in my dad’s ear. He nodded grimly and mouthed something back. I watched them communicate back and forth, and looked over at Adam. I could tell from his expression that he was as frustrated as I was. If something was going on, it wasn’t fair for them to be talking about it in front of us.
“Well, what is it?” I asked impatiently.
“There are hunters on their way as we speak to attack the pack,” my dad stated seriously, “We have only maybe an hour before they get here, and I need you two to spread the word and help the able bodied wolves get ready for a fight.”
“How many hunters are there?” I asked, and Adam nodded once. I could tell he was worried, too. The last time there had been an all out hunter versus werewolf fight was when I was six and hadn’t even shifted yet. This would be my first real fight, as it would be for most of my friends.
“The patrol reported various different scents, but they couldn’t pinpoint an approximate number,” Fae answered. “That’s why we need to be ready; we don’t know how much of a threat our enemies are.” She gave both of us a serious look, which basically told us to go now and get our pack members ready.
“We’ll be ready,” Adam said, and then he glanced at me and tilted his head towards the door. I took one last look at Fae and my dad before nodding in agreement. Then, Adam and I hurried from the office.
Apparently, Fletcher, Rhett, and Uncle Patrick had been sent to get the pack ready as well because as Adam and I got to the main floor of the pack house, we were surrounded in chaos. Younger werewolves who weren’t ready to fight, as well as the pack elders, were being herded downstairs into the panic room. The elders were protesting loudly, and the kids were screaming and crying because they didn’t know what was going on.
“What do we do?” I whispered to Adam.
“I guess we make sure everyone knows,” he replied simply, “Why don’t you go make sure everyone in their rooms knows what’s going on, and I’ll help my dad get people into the panic room.”
