"And stay out!"
My backpack was thrown out of an upstairs window as the front door slammed shut. I gingerly wiped the blood off the already healing cut on the side of my forehead and sighed. I trudged over to my backpack and pulled it onto my shoulder, wincing as the weight pulled on my tired muscle.
I glanced at the house one last time and narrowed my eyes. "Damn assholes," I muttered, and I started down the driveway.
That was the third time this month I'd been kicked out of a "boarding house for rogues" this month, but it didn't matter all that much. I'd had enough of this hick town anyways, and I'd already decided to move on. This was just a little push in the right direction.
After about 15 minutes of walking, I found myself on the main road. I bee-lined for a diner and dropped into a booth in the corner, away from most of the people. The dinner rush was just dying down, but there was still quite a few families chowing down.
"Hey."
I glanced up to see a waitress, looking to be maybe sixteen or seventeen, smiling shyly at me. "Can I get you something?" She asked, her dull brown eyes looking me up and down.
"I'll just get a burger and a coke." I glanced at her nametag and smirked. "Thanks, Mandy." The waitress's cheeks instantly flushed, and she mumbled something and rushed back to the kitchen. I chuckled to myself and dug into my densely packed backpack.
I pulled out my worn leather wallet and groaned at what I found inside. I only had one ten dollar bill and a couple ones, which meant that after I paid for this meal, I'd practically be broke.
"Running low on cash there, Eli?"
My head whipped up to see Kane sliding in across from me. Kane was a rogue who'd lived at the boarding house until he'd gotten his own place. We'd stayed in touch after he'd left, but I mostly kept to myself.
"What's it matter to you?" I asked. I hated showing weaknesses, and having no money was embarrassing.
Kane shrugged, but before he could say anything, Mandy returned. With a shaky hand, she set my burger down in front of me with my coke. "Thanks babe," I said, and she giggled.
Mandy noticed Kane and asked, "Can I get you something, sir?"
"Just a coffee," he replied, and Mandy nodded. "Thanks, love," he called as she started to walk away. At that, Mandy quickened her pace and Kane laughed.
"Kane, what are you doing here?" I asked after a moment.
"I heard you got kicked out," Kane replied as he made himself comfortable. "You can crash at my house if you want."
It was tempting, but I didn't feel like hanging around this town. "Nah, I think I'm going to move on to somewhere else."
"And where would that be?" asked Kane. I stayed silent, since I still hadn't figured that out. Kane nodded and said, "That's what I thought." He dug in his coat pocket and pulled out an envelope and slid it across the table to me.
I eyed it and asked, "What's this?"
"It's a bus ticket," replied Kane matter-of-factly. "I know a guy who houses rogues a couple hours west of here. He charges a ridiculous amount, so there's also 1000 dollars in there for that as well as for food and such."
