“I know how to fix your mate bond!”
I stared at my mom like she was crazy. “What are you talking about?” I asked, glancing back at Eli. “It’s impossible to fix a mate bond when it’s been broken.”
“No,” my mom replied firmly, “No, there’s a way.”
“What?” Eli breathed, and his arms tightened around me.
“Do you remember when I went to the national pack meeting last year?” My mom asked.
“Yeah,” I answered, wondering what that had to do with anything. Every year, the Imperial pack, who was basically werewolf royalty, had a pack meeting for every Alpha and Beta in the country to attend. Last year, my mom went with Fae and my dad.
“Well,” she continued, “While your father was in his meetings with Fae, I spent a lot of time with the Luna of the Alpha of the Imperial pack. Her name was Lea.”
“I know,” I replied, still confused, “I remember you telling me about her.”
“What does this woman have to do with mine and Dot’s mate bond?” Eli blurted, voicing both of our thoughts without realizing it.
“A lot, actually,” my mom replied, pursing her lips at us. “Lea told me about a ceremony that only members of the Imperial bloodline can perform. This ceremony can restore a mate bond.”
“What?” Eli and I asked in unison, and my eyes grew wide. “We can fix it?” I whispered.
“Yeah!” Eli cried excitedly, “Let’s just contact someone who is able to do the ceremony and reconnect our mate bond!”
My mom bit her lip and sighed. “Well, the problem is that the ceremony is rarely performed, and when it is, the success rate is low. Also, when you perform the ceremony, it’s a onetime deal. If it doesn’t work, you can’t try again.”
I frowned as I listened and asked, “Why is the ceremony rarely performed?”
“Because there is a chance that one or both of you will die in the process.”
“What?” Eli asked as the words started to sink in.
“Death as a side effect has only happened twice, though,” my mom said quickly, as she tried to be reassuring.
“How could that kill us?” I asked, pushing up off of Eli’s lap and standing up. “Is there some weird voodoo or blood draining involved?” The words came out sarcastically, but inside I was freaking out. There was a way for Eli and me be mates again, but it might not work and it could kill us.
“Dot, you have to understand,” my mom said, coming over to me and putting her arms on my shoulders, “When mates meet, their souls become attached, and if the bond is broken, their souls are ripped apart. Trying to mend the ripped edges of the soul is dangerous and trying. Sometimes, people just can’t deal with it.”
I glanced over at Eli, who’d climbed to his feet after me, and sighed. “Can we handle it?”
Before he could answer, my mom said, “Look, you guys need to think about this. Obviously, it is a big deal, but Dot, your father and I support whichever decision you make.”
