Eli.
I’d been awake for the past few minutes, and all I could do was study my ma— Eli. It was painful to look at him, knowing what I’d done, but at the same time, I couldn’t tear my eyes away.
He was sprawled in a stiff plastic chair, fast asleep, and his mouth was set in a tight frown. Eli’s dark brown hair was sticking out in random places, which was told me that he’d been there since he’d rescued me from Kane.
Suddenly, Eli stirred in his chair, and his eyes slowly opened. He yawned and stretched, and then his gaze found me, and his eyes widened. “Dot,” he breathed, sitting up quickly, “Dot, you’re awake.”
“Yeah,” I replied, swallowing hard. The tension between us was stifling, and there was a good minute of silence before I asked, “Adam’s dead, isn’t he?”
“Yes,” Eli replied grimly, and he frowned, “How did you know that?”
“I can feel it,” I stated, which was a vague understatement. An alpha and a beta have a strong connection, almost like a mate bond. I must’ve been unconscious when he died, as I didn’t feel any pain. However, when I’d first woken up, the emptiness I’d felt had told me everything.
With the loss of both the bond with Eli and the bond with Adam, I felt emptier than ever.
“The funeral is tomorrow morning,” Eli said quietly, “we weren’t sure if you were going to be awake, but Fae and Rhett want to bury him.”
“How long have I been out?” I asked, glancing at the clock.
“A day and a half,” Eli answered, “the medics said that you were going to be out for awhile so that your head could heal, along with your skin.” I noticed Eli looking down, and I followed his trail of sight to see the scars around my wrists. They were lighter than the one’s I’d seen on my mom’s back from her three years in captivity, but they were there because of how long my skin had been exposed to the nickel.
Again, there was a minute of silence. Neither Eli nor I knew what exactly to say to one another, and the elephant in the room was obviously our broken mate bond. Behind Eli’s dark eyes, I could see the pain that I was feeling as well.
“Why did you do it?”
“What?” I asked, completely off guard.
“Why did you do it?” Eli repeated, standing up from his chair, “why did you reject me?”
“Eli…” my voice trailed off and I bit my lip. I didn’t know what to say, and that wasn’t fair to Eli. “I did it for you, Eli.”
“Really?” Eli asked, and he snorted, which I took with complete surprise. “Dot, how in the hell was what you did for me?”
“I was trying to protect you,” I said, adjusting my body so that I was sitting straight up. I winced in pain, but tried my best to ignore it. “Eli, Kane said that if you came to get me, he was going to kill you! I couldn’t let that happen, so I broke the mate bond so that you wouldn’t be able to sense me.”
“You should’ve known I wasn’t going to stop looking for you,” Eli said, his hands grasping the footboard of my bed tightly. “Dot, I love you! I wasn’t going to leave you to be Kane’s.”
“I love you, too!” I cried, throwing my hands up in the air. “I couldn’t stand to think you were going to die because of me. I was trying to protect you!”
