“Today’s the day.”

I looked up from my laptop to see my dad leaning against the doorway. He had this knowing smile playing on his lips, and I frowned in response. “What are you talking about?”

“At today’s pack meeting, I’m going to formally accept Eli into the pack,” my dad clarified, and my eyes widened.

“You serious?” I asked, and my voice sounded slightly shrill. My dad nodded, and a grin spread across my face. I slid my laptop off of my folded legs and bounced quickly off of my bed where I’d been sitting. I threw my arms around my dad, and he grunted in surprise. “Thank you!”

“I would’ve done it sooner, but we had Pam and Greg’s funerals to attend to,” my dad said as I pulled away. There was a minute of silence, where I thought back to the two services for our fallen pack members.

“Does he know?” I asked, quickly pushing the quiet away.

“Nope,” he replied, “I thought I’d give you the honor.”

“Okay,” I said, giving him a mock salute, “Will do.”

“Good,” my dad stated, and he gave me a quick nod before leaving me alone. I watched him disappear down the hallway, and then a giant grin spread across my face. I pumped my hand in the air and closed the door to my bedroom as I reentered it.

I glanced at the clock and realized that I only had a little over half an hour before the pack meeting started. I quickly pulled off my soccer sweatpants and puffy paint t-shirt, and I crossed over to my dresser. I shimmied into some acid wash skinny jeans and tugged a cherry red blouse over my head.

Then, I shoved my feet into my favorite moccasins and hurried from the room. As I strolled through the hallways, I pulled my slightly tangled hair into a ponytail that brushed between my shoulder blades.

The first place I looked for Eli was his room. He wasn’t there, and I noticed with a chuckle that he’d made his bed. I closed his door behind me and then hopped down the stairs, where I immediately peaked into the kitchen.

Instead of finding Eli, I found Troy and Jaime sitting next to each other at the kitchen island, chowing down on a bag of nacho chips and a big bowl of guacamole. “Have you two pigs seen Eli?” I asked, raising an eyebrow as guacamole and chip residue dribbled onto his chin.

“Yeah,” Jaime mumbled, and I could see his half-chewed food covering his tonsils. “He’s in the living room with Josh.”
