THE LEADING MAN - PART 1: Carter Lane Garcia

"I want to go back to the Philippines."

I straighten my back as I convinced my mother about going back to the country that I've born. We're a former citizen there but not anymore until we lived here.

Since I was a kid, I've been always wanted to stay in the Philippines but my mother was always against with it. My dad is fine with my decision since I'm already twenty years old and I'm on my second year college and I'm planning to take my second year at Athlete University in the Philippines where my friends were studied.

"No. You're staying here, Carter Lane. I wouldn't let you." she turn her back on me and went back upstairs but I stopped her.

"If I'm staying here, then I won't continue my studies." pananakot ko na sana ay umepekto.

Her eyes got widened then dad entered the scene while reading magazines about business. "Let him, Carley. He's all grown up now. He's not a kid anymore so let him be."

Palihim akong napangiti.

Mom crossed her arms. "Why are you even so obsessed about going back to that country, huh?"

"Simple. I don't like here. It's suffocating me." pag-amin ko.

Dito kasi sa Canada puro academic ang pinagtutuunan nila ng pansin. Ni hindi ko naranasan ang makasali sa iba't ibang sports activities dahil wala naman silang ganto dito. Students here are so focused on their academics unlike in the Philippines.

There, I could meet my friends again and continued my taekwondo sport. It's indeed more fun in the Philippines.

"You can go now, my son. Ako na ang bahala sa mommy mo." dad said without taking his eyes off the magazine.

Dad is a pure Filipino and my mom is a pure Canadian so that makes me half-half.

"Thanks, dad."

I was about to open the door of our house when my mom spoked.

"Fine. I'll let you go back but in one condition." tumaas ang kilay ko habang hinihintay ang sagot niya. "You are not allowed to enter into a relationship until you haven't finish your fourth year college. No girls, Lane. Just focus on your studies. You can do whatever you want but that. I'll be monitoring you so you have no escape, my son. But if I find out that you're dating girls, you're going back here. Understood?"

Napabuntong-hininga ako. "Yes."

"Good. Now go. Take care." umakyat uli ito sa ikalawang palapag ng bahay.

"You still have a business in the Philippines, right?" dad spoke. Tumango ako. "What is it again?"

"The Mhami Resto."

"Oh yes, I remembered. I hope you managed it well especially now you're going back to the Philippines."

"Yes, dad." bahagya akong yumuko bago magpaalam.
