Logan sat down at his usual table in the library, ready to get a head start in his homework, only to be met with a small and surprised squeak. He looked up to see a student he hadn't seen before, at least not that he could remember.

"My apologies," Logan said quietly, as he was in a library. "I can move if you would like." The student dismissed his offer with a hand wave. "Very well."

The two worked in silence for several minutes before Logan felt a tap on his hand. Looking up, he saw the student making hand motions. He quickly recognized the motions as sign language.

V - I - a glance at the phone - R - G - I - L - a closed fist.

Logan smiled softly. "Virgil." The student nodded. "Might I ask your pronouns?" Virgil looked at the papers on the table. "Perhaps I could assign different numbers to different sets of pronouns, and you can sign the numbers that correspond to your pronouns?"

Virgil nodded. O - K.

Logan nodded and smiled. 1 - "she/her" - 2 - "he/him" - 3 - "they/them" - 4 - "it/it's" - 5 - "neopronouns".

Virgil thought for a moment. 2 - W.

Logan chuckled softly. "That's a W, not a 3." Virgil looked at the table, presumably embarrassed. "It's alright, they're easy to confuse. Most people who don't use sign language will lift their ring finger to create a three, as you did, but that is a W is sign language. Instead, you should extend your thumb. It will be retracted when you go to four."

Virgil looked a bit confused, but tried again. 2 - 3.

Logan nodded. "Very good, Virgil. I am Logan, and my pronouns are he/him."

Virgil nodded and began signing. L - O - G - A - they looked down at their phone to see it had auto-locked, and attempted to open it back up with one hand, as the other was still holding an A.

Logan chuckled softly. "If it's easier, you may simply call me Lo."

Virgil nodded. L - O.

"Just like that."

The two smiled at each other. This could be the start of something good.
