I walked into first period Monday morning, well rested, and ready for the start of a new semester. It was January and I was starting some new classes, I wasn’t too excited. I always hated change.
I sat down in the seat farthest back from the board, and closest to the door. I threw my books quickly on the seat next to mine to save it for Sandy. She was always late, especially when it came to school. We talked about our dread of waking up in the morning almost every single night before going to bed, and the cycle always continued until the beautiful days of summer time, when we savored every day of freedom we could get.
I sat looking down at my chipped red nail polish as I waited for the bell to ring. More people filed in and sat, as I did towards the back of the room. Nobody liked to be the guy who sat in the first seat, it was like an unspoken rule between everyone in high school, Don’t sit in the first seat unless you HAVE to. Sandy came in just as the bell was ringing, and right behind her was the boy I couldn’t stop thinking about, Matt. I looked at him quickly, and I knew he saw me, he walked in and leaned in close to my ear,
“Have any fun this weekend, Powell?” I looked up at him, mortified. I could feel myself turning red, and I couldn’t say anything. I continued to stare down at my hands.
Mr. Glint, our new Government teacher walked to the front of the room, folded his hands over his belly, and began to speak
“Welcome to Government 11, we’re going to start the semester off the same way you did the last in Economics, with a partner project, on a social issue, and how it relates to the government in the United States.” Sandy and I looked at each other, it could be worse.
“The pairs are as follows: Sandy, and Jerry; Michael and Kristin; Justin and Laura; Matt and Faith.” I immediately looked up and across the room where Matt was sitting, he looked equally as shocked, and I turned back to towards Mr. Glint, raising my hand to fix this.
“Any questions?” he asked, and nodded towards me to speak
“Is there any way to change my partner?” I pleaded
“Yeah Glint, I don’t know if this is gonna work” Matt chimed in, and I shot him a glance, thinking, “Shut up, let me handle this.”
“I’m sorry, pairs are final. Get with your partner and begin work, the project is due two weeks from today, that’s plenty of time to work out any ‘differences’” he said, mocking us. He sat down at his desk, and everyone began to shuffle around finding their partners, I walked over to Matt, because god knows his highness couldn’t be bothered enough to come to where I was sitting.
“What social issue are we doing?” I asked, standing over his desk, placing my hands on my hips.
“What ever you want.” He said, staring down at his phone.
“Well we could do something about abortion, or maybe gay rights-“
“No way, I’m not doing something about a bunch of homos.”
“Okay, very rude and uncalled for, and no one said you were gay, it was just a suggestion.”
“Just find something”
“I just gave you two choices! Where do you get off telling ME to find something?” I felt the fire in my stomach beginning to grow. I hated this guy. How could someone so nasty and arrogant be blessed with such amazing genes?
