The boat sent ripples through the calm water as Matt sailed us out into the bay. The moon bathed the boat in it's reflection off the water. My parents had extended my curfew to midnight, and spending time with Matt was the only way I'd want to spend it.

He dropped the anchor and the boat idled in the water, we were someway out in the water, but I could still see the light of the marina.

"Hey" he said walking over, I turned away from the water, my hair blowing slightly into my face, as he approached he tucked the hair behind my ear.

"So is this what you do with every girl?" I said smirking

"Nope, you're the first, the only." He said lacing his hand with mine. My stomach fluttered at his touch, as usual

"Dance with me" I said, pulling his other hand away from the rail of the boat

"I don't know how," he said looking down, I laughed

"Oh, come on, it's easy." I said, putting my left hand on his shoulder, and keeping my right locked with his hand.

            "Faith, there's no music."

"Do you always wear a coat when it's cold?"

"That doesn't make sense." He said laughing with me

"Exactly." We swayed together with the water keeping a pace for us as it slowly lapped against the side of the boat. We held each other that way for a long time

"So, now that you've taught me to dance," he whispered to me "I only have one more favor to ask."

            "And what would that be?"

"Will you dance with me, just like this, at the prom?" I looked into his eyes, suddenly feeling as if I was drowning in them

"I'd be honored." I said, the smile inescapable from my face.

I slept soundly that night. I was home by curfew. And it seemed the trust of my parents may have been coming back. I came clean about Matt and I, that this was my boy friend, and part of our deal, was that that was okay. Of course this may seem blown out of proportion, but when your parents are as strict as mine, it was a Godsend to find a boy that they even remotely liked, let along approved of.

Sunday felt like I had been transferred back into my old life. I spent the day studying, reading and just hanging out at home. Matt told me he was busy doing yard work at home, and so he didn't come by. I didn't think much, since we started dating Matt hadn't lied, so why should I have thought so than?

The next morning he picked me up for school in the red ford, and I was still feeling giddy from Saturday night. He seemed happy, just not as open about it, and I figured that was just something boys did. They didn't show everything, and though I knew how emotional Matt could be, I couldn't expect that any guy would be as flighty as someone as expressive as me.

When we walked into Government that morning, the first sign of trouble was written, in bold, on the pure white board.

Debate Day

I sat down on my side of the room, and Matt on his. With it being the middle of the year, we decided to stay in our old seats, so as not to disrupt the natural flow of everyone else. I'd be pissed if some girl took my seat, so I stayed put.
