Mrs. Kang had been noticing it for quite a while as they were seated on the table, Taehyun by her side with Beomgyu opposite them, that the two were exchanging glances at each other the whole time.
It was Beomgyu’s idea to sit and have lunch together with all the food and side-dishes she brought with her.
He was good-looking, cheerful, amiable and most importantly he bore nothing but adoration in his eyes whenever he looked Taehyun’s way; a perfect son-in-law, she nodded with a smile.
“Taehyunnie rarely talks about his love interests, it’s a bit unbelievable for me but now I realize my son has grown up.” She chuckled, ruffling Taehyun’s scarlet hair. Beomgyu smiled even more adoringly at how her presence had made Taehyun visibly more cheerful.
“Thank you so much, omoni, for being here with us and also for the food. Taehyun was right about your magical cooking.” Suddenly, he was just grateful to her for everything; from her existence being the reason Taehyun came into this world to raising Taehyun to be such an amazing person. But for now, he decided to keep his words minimal.
Mrs. Kang giggled at the compliment. “Then I should visit more often. Taehyunnie doesn’t let me, thinking it will bother my work. He doesn’t understand at all that I’m a mother who wants to take care of my baby. He's always been like this since he was a kid!!” She pulled Taehyun's ears playfully, the latter only smiled tight-lipped for two reasons; 1) alerting her to not spill much, 2) having a very unexplainable time under the table.
The foot grazing against his own was now stroking up his ankle, and it had become so difficult for him to take that he decidedly pulled away, much to the raven-haired’s dismay.
Taehyun looked away to simply avoid him while Beomgyu squinted his eyes. He was not going to let this slide, so he took a spoonful of his soup before humming pleasingly,
“Omoni, what do you think of Taehyun getting a tattoo?” Beomgyu asked, picking a sour olive to savour.
“Huh?” The mother-son duo had their eyes widened, no DNA test needed to prove their kinship.
“What about a piercing? You know, in his belly and such places?”
“By any chance, is he making you ask that?” Mrs. Kang now looked at both of them back and forth suspiciously. Taehyun shook his head desperately while Beomgyu gave her a confused head-tilt.
“Right after graduating high-school, he was obsessed with getting a tattoo done!” She continued, glaring at the younger. “I have no idea how and why but soon he calmed down as I kept opposing repeatedly. I see, so this was your plan all along, that you'd make your boyfriend request me!”
“Oh omoni, do you know—” Beomgyu had opened his mouth to instigate and it worked perfectly as he was shut up by a foot offering itself to him under the table. His eyes flicked to Taehyun, seeing him all flushed and subtly shaking his head pleadingly was enough to feed Beomgyu’s pride. He pressed his own feet closer, their toes curling together, “I’m on your side, omoni. I’ll scold him if he tries anything funny.”
Mrs. Kang gave him a proud smile, not knowing the real story behind the whole situation. All of it was peaceful and light-hearted as Taehyun let the older play with his feet until a message tone (again!!) circulated.
Taehyun peered at his phone before checking it; “Oh no, I forgot I had to volunteer at the library today.” He hurriedly stood up, pulling away his feet at which Beomgyu almost let out a groan.
“Hey, finish your meal at least.” Beomgyu pointed out as Taehyun picked up his ID card and scurried to leave, yelling a distorted ‘Later...’ as he did so, leaving the older huffing. Beomgyu sat back with his furrowed eyebrows without noticing the smile Mrs. Kang had.
