"Soobin hyung," Taehyun tapped on the taller's shoulder, causing him to turn around from his beau. "Can we talk?"
"Sure."
"Can we like...go somewhere quieter?" The silver-haired looked around with an awkward smile in hopes of Soobin getting his message. The older whispered something to Yeonjun before they shared a short kiss.
Then he led Taehyun to the balcony, away from the wild party, into a serene moonlit night.
"Tell me, what is it?"
The younger shut his eyes and took a deep breath, exhaling out all the negative thoughts.
Yes, he was the best and Yeonjun was no match. He's liked Soobin for a long time, and if he'd confessed properly before, Yeonjun wouldn't have gotten the chance to steal his man. He kept repeating it like a mantra in his mind.
"I like you, Soobin hyung."
Dead silence.
Taehyun opened his eyes to find the other blinking at him, confused.
"It's true, hyung, I've liked you since the day I saw you."
Soobin shook his head. "Hang on, Taehyun! I don't understand???? You've told me that once!"
"I know. But I think you didn't get the depth of my words back then." Taehyun took a step forward optimistically. "Maybe if I'd said it at the right time, tonight it'd be me instead of Yeonjun hyung."
"No, wait! What are you saying?? Aren't you dating Beomgyu?"
Worrying his lower lip between his teeth, the younger looked away, giving away the hint.
"Wait...are you only pretending to like him?"
When Taehyun stared at his feet instead of answering, Soobin didn't need further inquiry. He gasped, pacing a little.
"How can you do that to him, Taehyun? You have no idea about the way he longed for—" Soobin paused and took a deep breath. He looked hopeless, as if he were a parent disappointed in his child. "Beomgyu genuinely likes you, Taehyun."
Oh, that was it? Taehyun puffed his cheeks to release the tension that was building inside him while seeing Soobin in despair. He didn't know if he should be sad because the older was misunderstanding the whole issue, or happy because Beomgyu did a great job in acting to convince him that way.
"Hyung, that's not true! Didn't you see how flirty he is with everyone?"
Taehyun tried to smile but his cheeks betrayed him, he didn't know why he'd feel bad if Beomgyu was being flirty when he was the one who wanted someone like him. But however, he didn't mind as that helped him to appear a little sad.
Soobin rolled his eyes before his shoulders slumped down in defeat. He massaged the temple of his forehead, standing silently.
Taehyun took the chance to try again. "Y–Yeonjun hyung is also like that, isn't he? They were flirting with each other so shamelessly in front of us. Didn't you get angry?"
"I did. That's what he exactly wants." Soobin muttered through his pout.
Taehyun didn't seem to have it heard, given the way he was still expecting an answer. So the older sighed before gripping his shoulders and looking into his eyes. "I know Yeonjun is like that. And I've accepted him the way he is far way before you confessed to me in college. So I'm genuinely requesting you to move on this time."
"Why? Tell me, why can't you like me? Is there something lacking in me than Yeonjun?" Taehyun raised his voice, startling the older. But he didn't care about his tone when he was feeling so much insulted.
It hadn't ever happened to him that he'd try so hard to persuade someone and they wouldn't give in. So now that he was being rejected by Soobin for the second time, he didn't mind behaving a bit brazen about it. At least, he deserved to know why someone like him had to feel this way.
"You don't lack anything, Taehyun. Your family is richer than Yeonjun's in all aspects. You're much more sophisticated than him. You know what to talk about when and with whom. You're neither clumsy, nor do you make any mistakes. You're just above everyone else."
Taehyun frowned. He thought he was going to hear something negative about him for the first time. But here, Soobin was showering him with compliments that he's used to getting on a daily basis.
"Then what's the problem?" He was even more confused now.
"That is the problem." Soobin emphasized, letting his hands fall off the shorter's shoulders, now slightly walking away. "Because I think you're so perfect that I feel cautious around you. Because you're so amazing, I think of you very highly. When we worked together on the students' council team, I was intimidated by you and I was proud of myself when you approached me to be my friend. It's a relationship purely based on respect, so it's just impossible for me to think of you romantically."
To say Taehyun was speechless would be an understatement, he was shocked. All his life, he thought he had to be the most perfect human because that's the only way he can prove his worth and make people stay. But he never realized that amidst achieving that goal, he shouldn't forget to live like a normal person.
It's not like he didn't want to, more like he's suppressed all the urge to have fun most of the time to reach where he is today. Perhaps, it wasn't the best idea.
Soobin sighed once more, and then started walking ahead, but he paused to look back to add, "Stop spoiling your mood this way and enjoy the party. I'll pretend as if we never had this conversation."
And he didn't waste a single second before heading in.
Taehyun blinked his heavy eyes a few times. It was over.
Then why wasn't he feeling devastated?? Why wasn't there the ugly feeling as if he already knew all these would happen from the start? Was this a conspiracy against himself to face this situation and have a clearance of the older's feelings? Soobin had just made him feel like a teenager who's only confused about his himself.
Taehyun never asked for it, but he was suddenly looking into the mirror. That's what actually hurt; to see the truth.
Those thoughts clouded his head so much that he didn't even notice himself taking slow steps into the party until his eyes landed on Beomgyu—dancing with Yeonjun, and now everyone cheering them.
They were hand-in-hand doing something that looked like a jazz step. When they finished, people around them applauded for them. The way they were smiling at each other, so proudly, twisted Taehyun's belly in a weird way. He saw Hueningkai emerging out in awe, and showering compliments on both Yeonjun and Beomgyu before the oldest's eyes found Soobin somewhere in the room, and he ran to him to receive his hourly dose of kisses.
Yeonjun, Yeonjun, Yeonjun. That's the only person everyone cared about.
Clenching his jaw, rubbing his eyes, carrying a heavy heart, Taehyun headed for the hotel reception.
It was past midnight by now and he didn't have any energy left to drive or book a cab for himself. So although unwillingly, he had to stay in one of the rented rooms above, like always abandoned and alone.
But if only—even by chance—he had noticed a pair of deep orbs looking his way with immense concern, he might've realized how wrong he was.
