In the early 2000s it became a rumor that Em was homophobic due to the lyrics in his songs, the use of the word 'face, and a few other comments that he had made in interviews. He consistently joked about both being gay and hating gay people. This caused a lot of backlash from the LGBT community.
It got so bad that Elton John reached out to him and asked if he could help in any way. Elton knew Em wasn't actual homophobic and wanted to help him prove it; so they performed 'Stan' at the grammys together.
