After Mrs. Macready, the strict, grouchy housekeeper of the mansion, settled the wagon and the horse in the stables, she led the five children into the mansion and gave them some rules, even her own in the house. The mansion was huge, with all the bookshelves, statues and photographs of people from the past hung on walls. It was filled with bedrooms and guest rooms and lots of comfy chairs and couches.

"Professor Kirke is not accustomed to having children in this house." Mrs. Macready began. "And, as such, there are a few rules we need to follow. There will be no shouting." The children froze and looked at her a bit speechless. "Or running." She added. "No improper use of the dumb waiter..." As they followed the housekeeper up the stairs, Susan came across a white statue and reached out her hand to it.

"NO!" Mrs. Macready exploded all of a sudden. "Touching of the historical artifacts!" Susan placed her hand down motionless. Peter and Edmund looked at each other trying not to laugh. Dawn just rolled her eyes and scoffed in disbelief. They kept on walking until they reached the upstairs hall. "And above all..." Mrs. Macready said. "There shall be no disturbing of a Professor." Lucy was surprised by the way she spoke to them. She noticed a shadow underneath the door, thinking it's him. So she quickly walked away to the room.

As the children removed and hung their coats and settled in the room, Dawn walked out to the hallway and saw a telephone on the table.

"Mrs. Macready?" She asked the housekeeper. "May I use the phone please?"

Mrs. Macready looked at her square in the eye. "What for?" She grouched.

"Why, to call my sister and my brother of course." Dawn told her. Mrs. Macready hesitated for a minute and then said. "...Sure..."

"Thank you." Dawn said as she picked the telephone and dialed her maternal grandparents home number.

"Hello?" Aunt Sharon picked up the phone.

"Hi Aunt Sharon. It's Dawn." Dawn said.

Aunt Sharon smiled. "Oh Dawn, are you okay?" She asked.

"Yes, I'm alright." She said. "Is Jane and Daniel there?"

"Yes, would you like to speak with them?" Aunt Sharon asked. "Yes please." Dawn replied. After a minute, Jane was on the phone. "Dawnie?"

"Hi Jane!" Dawn said. "Did you and Daniel arrived and settled well?"

"Yeah, we did, did you?" Jane asked.

"Yeah." Dawn answered. "How's Daniel?"

"He's well." Her sister said. "He misses you though." Jane wished she could see her sister. And Dawn wished she could see her too.

"I'm glad." Dawn slightly smiled. "I miss him too." She thought for a moment. "What about Grandpa Henry and Grandma Alice? Are they alright too?" She asked.

"Yeah, they told me to say hi." Jane smiled.

"How nice!" Dawn said. "Tell then I said hi back too." Jane nodded. "I will, Dawn." Jane said.

"Do they know what happened to Grandpa Paul and Grandma Anne also?" She asked her sister, trying not to cry.

Jane bit her lip. "They do..." She replied. "They said they already heard from our mum."

Dawn sighed and nodded. "What else did they say about it?" She asked.

"They cried and said how sorry they were." Jane answered sadly. Dawn just nodded without saying a word.

"They didn't blame themselves either, did they?" She finally asked. Jane sighed. "No..." She said.

Dawn nodded. "Ok. I hope they're alright."

Jane nodded. "Yeah they are fine."

"That's good." Dawn said. "I do wish to see them again soon."

"I know you do." Jane replied. Just then, Mrs. Macready appeared nearby.

"Times up." She said. Dawn sighed. "I love you all, I have to go, but I really will miss you." She told her sister.

"I miss you too, Dawn." Jane said. "Be safe, alright?" Dawn nodded. "I will." She said. "Bye, Jane."

"Bye." Jane said and they both hung up. Dawn sadly put the phone down and went into the room where Peter, Susan and Lucy were chilling. They were listening to something on the radio. It was news from home.

"German aircraft carried out several attacks on Great Britain three nights ago. The raids lasted for several hours..."

Dawn climbed into an empty bed and pulled under covers along with her stuffed animal, trying not to cry as thoughts of her grandparents' deaths came to her mind. Susan turned off the radio and Peter came to her. "Dawn?" He asked.

"Yeah?" Dawn said as she untucked the blanket off her face, still hugging her stuffed animal in one of her arms.

"Are you alright?" Peter said as he stayed by her.

"Mm-hmm." Dawn nodded. Peter played with her hair softly. "Are you sure?" He asked his girlfriend again.

"Yes." Dawn replied, almost in a whisper. "Just...missing home and my family.."

Peter nodded. "I know what you mean." He said and kissed her forehead. Dawn blushed by his kiss and smiled slightly. Peter smiled back at her.

"These sheets feel scratchy.." Lucy sadly said while sitting on the bed. Peter, Dawn and Susan went beside her bed.

"Wars don't last forever, Lucy." Susan comforted her sister. Lucy sighed. "Hopefully not..." She said.

"We'll be home soon." Susan added. Just then, Edmund emerged to the bedroom in his pajamas and long blue button down robe.

"Yeah, If home is still there." He scoffed. Everyone just stared at him.

Susan looked at Edmund, quite annoyed. "Well isn't it time you're in bed?" She said as she made a face.

"Yes, Mum!" Edmund sassed and rolled his eyes.

"Ed!" Peter shouted at his brother. Edmund just sighed and looked away. Peter then turned to Lucy. "You saw her outside." He said. "This place is huge. We can do whatever we want here."

"Whatever we want?" Dawn raised one of her eyebrows. "But we have to follow the rules that Mrs. Macready gave us. Or we'll be in so much big trouble for sure."

Susan nodded. "I agree." She said to her brother and his girlfriend.

"Oh, right. Sorry." Peter corrected himself.

"I think we should get some rest." Susan said.

"Tomorrow's going to be great." Peter told Lucy. "Really." Lucy just nodded. And they all did their night routine, changed into their pajamas, and took a rest in their room, hoping that tomorrow would be a better day.
