27) Anger As Fuel

We’re sitting in this super cozy coffee shop and drinking our orders.

I took chai latte, Aja took vanilla latte with soy milk and Lexi has some mocha-latte-brown-extra-whatever.
It’s a REALLY long name!
My chai latte is right now the only thing I’ll ever protect more than my life. Touch my chai latte, I dare you!

“So how did you and Platz meet?” Lexi asks and takes a sip from her drink.
Aja stares me in the eyes with worry in her eyes.

Our story isn’t exactly a nice little fairy tale.

I chuckle nervously.

“Well, I met Daniel in middle school but then I moved. I started this high school like, a year ago. He had a crush on me but I didn’t care. At all. I’m really cold..,” I begin and take a sip from my chai latte.
Then I continue.
There's a chuckle hidden in my voice.

“So a week after blowing him off after he asked me on a date, Jessy and I was out partying. Funny story, I blew him off by I telling him that Jessy and I were going out, that’s why we were out. So in the middle of things I got pulled by my wrist. I instantly knew that wasn’t Jessy. This dude pulled me out of the club and start hitting me. He tried to rape me, I guess. I somehow ran away and found this park. I sat down on a bench and was entirely broken. I was also really drunk. Then Daniel just found me. I told him what had happened, he calmed me down and helped my drunkass home. That’s how we feel in love,” I explain and shrug as I finish the last sentence.

“That’s seriously the best how-we-met story I’ve ever heard,” Lexi stutters.
Then she turns around and looks at Aja.
“How about you and Dan?”

Aja blushes.
“We met at a gig he had. I was just confronting the owner because at my band’s gig we didn’t get ALL our money. It got pretty intense, like REALLY and Dan separated us. During his song. The rest of the band already went to this school. So yeah, that’s how we met…,”

“That’s also r-... Awesome!” I say and carefully push Aja’s shoulder.

So close.
I was so close to say romantic. That’s not me, I say either awesome or amazing or SOMETIMES beautiful.
But never, ever, romantic.

I hope they didn’t notice it.

“Yeah! Amy’s right! That is a pretty awesome story!” Lexi agrees.
“Thanks,”
“Well, you all know how I met Wayne, no surprises…,”

“Yeah but that doesn’t make it less fairy taley,” Aja giggle and takes a sip from her vanilla latte.
“Seriously, Aja is right. Your story is cute. And really awesome,” I chuckle.

“I haven’t heard you say cute once,” Lexi remarks.
I shrug.

We finish our coffees and walk to this place that is supposed to have promdresses.

“So Wayne wanted me to come to this meadow…,” Lexi begins and glances at her phone.

“Oh my god, he’s probably going to pop the question!” I cheer.

Lexi’s face turns pale as she looks at me with terrified eyes.
“What..?”
“Oh ehm, sorry Lexi! I meant like, prom invitation…,” I laugh.

Her face turns normal.
“Oh, ok! Good…,”

Wait did she really think I meant proposal? They’re both like, 16!
I tense up for a second, doesn’t Lexi love him enough?
But then I also remember that Lexi is her own person, she may also have trust or commitment issues.
Like me.

Though, I see it in her look as she sees Wayne that she loves him. Maybe we are more alike than I ever thought. Nothing bad, but now I know how to make her go past that.
It’ll be a lot easier for her.
