Chapter Six

Amber scurried into the bedroom and found Eva resting on the green bed. She sat against a stack of pillows and looked miserable. She was staring directly down at the sheets that covered her body. Amber figured she didn't know her and Luna had entered, so she made their presence known.

"Eva!"

Eva raised her head and gasped as she spotted the girls. "Luna...Amber..." she croaked.

Amber let go of Luna's hand and rushed up to the bed. Once she was closer, she was able to see what a mess she was. Her face didn't light up as it usually did. It appeared blotchy and extremely pale at the same time. Her eyes didn't send off a violent glow like they should. Her emerald eyes looked glossy and tired. There was a small stain of blood under her nose to prove the point that her mother had told the truth about the nose bleeds. Her hair was a tangled wreck as it draped over her minuscule shoulders.

"God, Eva! What happened to you?"

"I don't know," Eva responded in a horsey voice. "Just two days ago I began to feel horrible. Then yesterday the whole group took me to the hospital. Amber, I'm in so much pain!" She cried as she gripped onto the sheets.

Amber frowned and ran a hand along the top of Eva's head. "We will fix you, okay?"

Eva sniffled and nodded her head. Amber was curious as to how she could have caught the illness. Amber looked over to Luna who was staring at Eva intently, almost appearing shocked.

"Oh! Amber!"

Amber followed the voice to find her mother at the doorway. She held a glass of water and entered the room.

"Hi, mom."

"Here, dear," her mother said as she handed Eva the cup. Eva had a hard time simply lifting her arms to take the glass.

"Thank you," she whispered as she eventually took the glass in her shaking hands. Amber watched as Eva desperately attempted to raise the cup to her lips. She looked so weak and helpless. Eva almost dropped the glass before it made its way to her mouth, so Amber helped her by guiding the glass to her lips. She guided Eva into taking multiple sips and then took the glass out of her weak grasp.

"This is so horrible," Amber's mother whined with a shake of her head.

"So the doctors have no idea what's wrong?" Luna asked.

Amber's mom did not even glance at Luna while she responded. "No they don't."

"Well I think I do," Luna said, making Amber's mother finally look at her.

"Excuse me?"

Luna ignored her mother as she looked to Amber. "Let's go in the hallway."

Amber hesitated. How did Luna know what she had? Luna wasn't a doctor. And why couldn't she tell right where they were? Was it some sort of secret?

Whatever Luna's issue was, Amber stood from the bed and stepped out into the hallway. As she left the room, she heard Luna tell Amber's mother to join them as well. All three of them stood in the hallway after Luna shut the door in clear attempt to block Eva's hearing.

"I didn't want Eva to hear this because I don't want to freak her out. But I know what she has, and it isn't good," Luna said to begin.

Amber tilted her head. "What is it?"

"It's an illness I learned about in college. It is caused not by something, but someone..."

Amber must not have been on the same page since she didn't get what Luna was saying. Had Eva caught it from someone else? Was she simply saying it was contagious?
